Forgive me for I am new to recording. I just received a Boss DR-770. Excellent machine so far. My question is, is it possible to hook the machine up to a sampler of some sort in order to have more sound options?

Yup. I don't know the exact spec on the 770, but I know it has a MIDI OUT. Just hook that up to the MIDI IN on a rackmount or phrase sampler and hook the audio outputs of the sampler up to a mixer.

You'll also have to set the MIDI channels to the same channel to operate the sampler from the 770. Check the manuals or maybe someone knows more about the 770 and can help in that area.

As far as samplers go, if you want to use loops, phrase samplers are good and cheap (Boss makes some nice ones). If you want to use drumkits and multisampled instruments, you'll need a rackmount sampler or, of course, one the numerous software options. Emu, Akai and Yamaha all make real nice hardware samplers, good prices used too. I recently picked up a used Akai S2000 for $150.

Good luck

Thanks for the Reply. Would it be possible to run the Boss thru my computer thru the MIDI Port? I have fruity loops and reason installed. I could then use the pads on the Boss to produce the sounds from Fruity or Reason?

Exactly. Again you have to set the channel in Reason you're using (Drum track for example) to the same channel the 770 is sending on. I don't have the specs on the 770, but if it just has a drum track it most likely is sending on MIDI channel 10.

You have to assign the port and stuff like that, but rather than get into, try it out and see if/where you get stuck and post back here.
