In Cubase SE, when you save a file, what file type is it saved as? Mp3?...WMA?...standard CD format? (not sure the actual name). I was just wondering b/c someone told me I would need Cakewalk Pyro to be able to put my songs onto CD, and I thought that was probly not true.

Thanks.

SE exports as standard .wav files which is want you want to save to if you're going to burn a CD (you don't want any compression that will affect your sound). It will save to wma or, if you have a codec installed, to MP3 but those are compressed formats that will change your sound- export to .wav.

Yes, you'll need a burner program to put it on CD, but most burners come with Nero or EZ-CD Creator and those will do just fine.

If you just save the project you are working on, it saves as a Cubase specific .cpr file. You can't do anything with it except open in Cubase.

When you record audio tracks, they save in the Pool as .wav files. When you do an audio export, it produces a .wav file according to the parameters you select. More advanced versions (SL and SX) give you other options such as mp3.

To burn the finished project to a CD, you just export a stereo mix down, which will produce a .wav file you can burn to CD with any buring software.

Cubase SE will export to mp3, but it has a limit on the number of times you can do it without purchasing some sort of upgrade (maybe 10-20 songs?). I don't like it's mp3 encoding compared to other programs, anyway. I think exporting it to a 16/44.1 .wav and ripping that to .mp3 in iTunes or Nero results in a better sounding mp3 for upload. Just my opinion. You will always want a 16/44.1 wav anyway, for burning to CD. I also export a 24/44.1 wav (without any master effects) in case I want to have the project professionally mastered later.

So you can save the songs as .wav and be able to hear them when put in a walkman or stereo? I tried this with a few cd's using Acid Rock by saving to .wav and I couldn't hear them in my stereo or walkman.

NO, you export them as .wav to your hard disk (and they have to be 16-bit/44.1khz), but then you still have to create an AUDIO CD in Nero or EZ-CDcreator. RTFM.

Save them as a standard data disk and you won't hear them in a consumer audio device, although some newer players will play data disks with MP3 files.

'Ya gotta know what the target device with accept and give it what it wants.
