I don't know about Brian Mays amp rig, but his guitar which is made from 150 year old chimney wood by him and his dad has a lot to do with his tone.

I believe that the sound he gets is from a combination of things.

To get the Brian May sound you need:

1) Brian May
2) The red guitar
3 Vox AC30
4) Homemade treble booster type thingy....

You guys aren't talking about that terrible boxy sound like in the solo for We will rock you...?

Or are you?.... Just wondering.

Hey, VoxVendor.

Don't touch Brian OK? ;)

But seriously, I sometimes love and sometimes hate his tone. Have you heard it in "Tie Your mother Down"?

And it is very suitable for those amazing harmonies

*Pulls Hands back off of Brian*:D

No haven't heard that one...

One thing that Brian May does is set his delay in time with the music. That way as he goes up the scale it sounds like 2 guitars playing in harmony.

You're right, Firebird.

He sets his delay almost 1 sec. further and does this kind of "canon" thing that sounds great.

Okay, I did a little research and found the rig he used in "Bohemian Rhapsody." Flanger set with the speed at 0%, depth at 0% reg at 0% and level at 50% and a lot of overdrive. Give that a try.

. . . plus a Vox AC30 to a delay, then another Vox AC30 to another delay into another Vox AC30.

I think the layered stuff off of 'Sheer Heart Attack' was done that way.

damn vox...i thought i was the only one that didn't like that tone

Yeah, I think the sounds that Boston had going back then were the cats ass..

Brian May also uses a coin instead of a "normal" pick. You wouldn't believe it makes such a big difference until you hear it.

i've tried using a coin before, and the edges catch..

did he shave it down??

T

aaaahhh... "shave" was the word I didn't know.

yes, I guess his "coin" looks like a pick. if I had the tools to do such things I would try it too...
