i am using the last qotsa album as a reference for my new project... i love the full natural sound of the album with its limited effects use, and definate human touch... any one seen any articles on the net about how they recorded the album? i went to the web site but all i found was this....

*drools* wow what a set up. How can you record with the hardwood flooring and the bare walls. Wouldn't the echo be really bad in that envoirnment? I think that the pic is not from the recording session, but probably more from a practice. The equipment is nice though.

There is more to acoustics then just covering everything up with carpet and padding. A good sounding room with hard surfaces is actually best but the trick is the 'good sounding' part. Those rooms are designed for that.

That pic is probably the guitar tracking setup for the recording (hence the mics). Usually in a situation like that they setup a bunch of amps and mics so they can switch between different amp/mic combos very quickly. They usually wouldn't have all of that running at once.

But it'd be fun to hear them try :D BTW, can anyone ID the guitar JH is using in the No One Knows vid?

the guitar is a maton mastersound, aussie made guitar, quite inexpensive actually they retail for just over $1000aud here so thats about $550usd.... its funny the guitar company is credited on the album along with messa amps, but when i saw them live he didn't use a maton or a messa, so in a way you kind of have to question the endorsment thing....

on the other hand these matons are poping up everywhere here in aus, they are definatly a nice looking guitar...

heres another pic from the websitei think they are just playing with us here

Probably not. If you have the mics and enough spare channels that's the best way to audition different mics with the cab. While the guitar is playing they can solo the different channels and pick which mic(s) works best for that track.

Wrong. Look at the angles of the walls in the background...that's a damn expensive studio.

I'm sure it sounds awesome.
