Hey all,

I am anticipating the arrival of my Fostex A-80...I have been doing some research and it seems that Quantegy 467 is the best tape for this gear...anyone know where I can order it? I cant find anywhere in my location that still carries it...I also didnt know that Quantegy was formerly Ampex...Is that true?

from some of my research I have been told that the dolby C noise reduction is not very good, so I am planning on incorporating my teac an-80 for tracking and mixdown....

any other tips? right now I am trying to figure out the problem with my teac
A 2300 sx 2 track.. It has a nasty warble on playback until the recorded music starts to play....Its not the tape as I have run new and recorded tape and it still does it.

any other tips?

thanks all....

467 is digital tape so you don't want that for an analog deck. Maybe you mean 457, which is the longer version of 456 and recommended by Fostex. 457 is hard to find. It comes up on eBay now and then, but usually pricey. In the mean time RMGI LPR35 is comparable to 457 and is sold new.

Sounds like you have a Model 80 or an A-8. To my knowledge Fostex never made an A-80

The previous thread had a picture of a Model 80 I'm pretty sure. The manual is available online if you need it. Quantegy-online had NOS 457, but the website seems to be down for the last few days. Don't know if that means the project has been abandoned or just a server problem.

:)

its a model 80

Its a model 80....the guy sending it told me it was an a-80....

thanks for the tape info...really want to score the right stuff new...you think some outfit would really get in to mfg new tape big time again....

oh well.....such is the life for those of us who like tape better than 1s and 0s i guess..

i totally dig opening a new box of tape still wrapped in celophane...

smells like creativity..

clevo, I have pdf's of the Model 80 Owner's Manual and the Service Manual if needed. Downloaded them off the internet sometime in the last couple of years so they are public domain AFAIC. PM me if you need them.

Model 80 is neat. Congrats.

Oh, and +1 to LPR35...that's the stuff to use IMO. To save cost you could look for 3600' pancakes and spin them off onto two 7" reels...$35 + S&H at US Recording Media...

:you think some outfit would really get in to mfg new tape big time again: The sales for tape from RMGI and ATR are still strong. If we keep buying on a regular basis, they'll keep selling it (I hope)

Quantegy-online is back up btw and a NOS 1800' reel of 457 is $28.95 but it doesn't let you order... Also, Otari still makes 2 track reel decks and I think you can special order a 4 track. ? ATR makes refurbished Ampex machines. (If you have an extra $30k...) And there are heads and parts a plenty for many machines....
