Tape shortage... I knew it was coming a few years ago but was knee deep in bit rates and low seek time hard drives...

For the last year I've stripped down to some simple preamps and a fostex R8 1/4" 8-track to exclusively record an experimental rock n roll band.

..so I forgot about the shortage of tape and now can't but quantegy 456 1/4" on 7" reel where I once was able to.

Where do you guys get it? I have a project coming up(luckily only 2 songs but there's a demand for 3 takes of each).

One-pass stuff off of ebay or does someone still sell it new? Any info would be much appreciated,

Matt M

Quantegy (Ampex) is back in production, so things will slowly but surely pick up from here. Supply is sporadic though.

1/4" X 7" 456/457 is more abundant than the bigger formats right now. Try the following: eBay is a good source (avoid the "one-pass" if you can). You may have to go with 457 or 406/407 and/or larger 10 ½” reels and spool it off for time being.

You’ll want to call and make sure the website accurately reflects product and price listed.

Thanks, Tim. My source gave me a slightly exagerrated answer but I figured that between capitalism and the number of analog studios in operation, scarcity wouldn't be too big of a concern...

We'll record on..
