quality?

hello

i'd like to know what people think.

do you think it's actually possible to produce an industry standard quality recording on a home machine, using software instead of hardware processors (compressors, effects, etc.)?

i am certain i can produce a great DEMO recording at home, though.

just wondering what you guys think...

If your engineering skills are good enough, you can produce professional results with almost anything. 2/3's of it is skill, 1/3 gear.....

What Bruce said. It's not gear so much as it is the skill of the recordist and those being recorded. The gear is last in line.

in my opinion if you put a class A audio engineer on a pc with a half decent sound card like an audiophile 2496(which actually is pretty good) ,
a few decent mics and a yamaha mg mixer then imho yes.
i agree with the others. skill is where its at, and after many years i'm still not there. but i love the fun of it. for me - thats what its all about.
starting with an idea in your head and hasving fun with it.

I disagree. While you might get "pro* results, you will probably be making compromises to do so. I don't believe you'll be able to have lush reverb tails coming from top end Lexicon units or beatifully treated acoustic spaces as one example. I could provide many, many more examples, but hopefully you get my point.

However that said, there are many *industry level pro recordings* that are pretty poor sounding.

While I agree strongly that it is the skills and not the equpment that are the major ingredients for quality sounding recordings, I also believe good equipment makes it MUCH easier to do so, and still will provide that last little bit on the UPPER end recordings that the home user won't ever achieve...even with their UAD cards and WAVES plugins.

Put an Alan Parsons or whoever with a cheap setup, sure he will make something sound good, but I'll bet he will make A LOT of compromises to achieve his end result...

I do love all the amp buzz on VanHalens last CDs... what a riot. The playing almost makes it sound pretty cool and 'authentic' though!!!
