Thanks,
Rick

PS: I just tried this myself for the first time, and the "Lo-Fi" version sounds terrible....not worth bothering with.
The 128 version is better, but my connection can't stream it fast enough to hear in continuously. Oh well. I hope your connection is better than mine.

sonnybeeech! I like it, I like it...

Since I like George winston alot, I like this a whole lot.

I like the playing and the recording, and you noodling around with the melody and the way you go large and then pull back.

A friend of mine is on the system next to me and is a g player of some renown in our little burg and we both tried to pick this appart and can't. Have listened to it about 6 times now.

How about a little more on any reverb, a/d converters, bit rate recorded, software and system used, etc.

sounds great through my dsl connection

Have Verizon top option DSL 1.5 mb down, 768K up through router with 10/100 switching hub with 100mb ethernet adapters and one other on the lan using email and also listening.

sounds great at 128k

Rick,

Very nice as is, leave it be. It just don't get much better than that. Crystal clear, and the guitar sounds rich and warm. What more could you want.

You got my vote. I like it very much. What was the open tuning you used. It reminds me of one of my slack key tunings.

Damn Rick!

It doesn't get much more beautiful than that! Good work on ALL sides; ALL the way around! Give yourself a BIG pat on the back!

Applause!!! Applause!!!!!

WOW!!! That was INCREDIBLE!!!
Have you heard Phil Keaggy? You sound alot like him......AWESOME!!

What kind of guitar do you have? It sounded "alomst" as good as your playing. :)

Thanks for all the kind reviews !

To answer questions:
The mikes are a matched stereo pair of Earthworks QTC1s, going into an M-Audio DMP2 preamp, then into an M-Audio Flying Cow A/D converter, then into a Roland VS1680 via the SPDIF digital input.

The VS was recording in 24-bit MTP mode (a compressed format). The reverb is the standard "Cathedral" patch on the VS's effect cards, mixed at about "70" (I think that is a tad too much and would lower it slightly if doing it again.) The stereo signal is kept panned hard left and hard right throughout. I also used the MTK patch during mixdown to apply a small amount of 3-band compression, no more that 3 dB on absolute peaks in each band.

The guitar is a custom-built "Jensen" dreadnaught size. A friend of mine built it. It is basically a copy of a Breedlove in size and bracing, but has an Engleman spruce top and Rosewood back and sides. It also uses a Carvin maple neck...just like the ones they sell as Strat replacement ! I was using elixer nanoweb strings, 13-56, tuned a half step low, but otherwise standard tuning.

My most influential artists are :
J. Hendrix
James Marshall Hendrix
"Jimi"
"the Voodoo Chile"
Ed Gerhardt
Bill Mize
The Band of Gypsies
Carlos Santana
Hendrix
John McLaughlin
Did I mention Jimi Hendrix ?

I haven't heard Phil Keaggy. I'll try to check him out. I am actually trying to imitate Hendrix ! I'm just not very good at it.

Thanks again.
Peace,
Rick

THe sound is AMAZING. clarity and warmth. man, I am literally speechless.

PREAMP COMPARISONS

For those interested in preamp comparisons, I have re-recorded two songs on my MP3 site with my new Earthworks LAB102 preamp.
The second (lower on page, newer) versions of "Sidh Bheag, Sidh Mhor" and "Planxty Irwin" utiilze the LAB102. The older versions utilized the M-Audio DMP2.

They should not be regarded as a direct A/B comparison, since they were also processed slightly differently. I also doubt that any significant difference comes across in MP3, but it might be worth a comparison for those with really good ears.

I will probably delete the older versions in a few days.

Peace,
Rick
