For those of you who mix modern metal; things similar to As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, August Burns Red, etc. that have screaming vocals rather than singing, I have some questions that I hope can be answered. it seems like that style of music isn't widely accepted (although it's super popular with a certain crowd) and so it's tough to find good info about how to mix it.

So basically, i find a ton of info about how to mix singing vocals, using things like compression, de-essing, eq and what not, and i'm wondering if the same rules typically apply to screaming as well? For example, would you EQ screaming in the same manner that you might eq singing? And does a de-esser work the same in both styles?

Like I said, I'm having trouble finding examples for this style online, so if you have any experience with it, your thoughts would be great!

Sorry for being a bit vague, I'm just not sure where to begin...

Eq shouldn't be the same for anything so no.

Same with a De-esser, since you can tweak what frequency a De-eser works on.

But yes on the other stuff, you compress the hell out of screams just like you would singing for this genre.

everything is allowed:
- much de-essing
- hard compression
- multiband compression
- EQing (of course)
- FX like e.g. chorus
- doubling the screams
- ...

The thing is, everything is a case by case sort of thing.

You always have to:
1. listen to what you have
2. visualize what you want it to be
3. employ the tools necessary to turn what you have into what you want it to be.

A lot of times, a dynamic mic, like an SM7 or an RE20 is used to capture the vocal. A ton of compression is generally applied with an 1176, LA2A or similar compressor/limiters. EQing out anything that doesn't fit in the mix and adding effects that widen the vocal without making it less in-your-face also have to be done.

1. EQ out the harshness
2. compress
3. saturation
4. compress again

thats what i do for them only put enough saturation on to make it sound gritty though

I add distortion to the screamers i record.... makes them sound good and brutal
