Sorry but i have a couple more questions,i'm almost there!
my M-Audio firewire audiophile says it has 4 inputs and 6 outputs,i see 2 jacks that are labeled input but i thought they were just left and right channels and considered as 1 input,so if i have 4 inputs should't i have 4 jacks?
i am still wanting to try and record 2 seperate tracks and can't figure out how to hook it all up.on one track i want to record my vocals and on the other track i want to record the music from my cd+g player.

yamaha emx 66m mixer
M-Audio firewire audiophile
audacity software

how can i hook this up so i can sing along while the cd+g player is playing and record into 2 tracks, one with voice and one with music,so i can play around with the tracks and do a mixdown?

thanks again

The SPDIF IN carries 2 channels of digital input. Add that to the 2 RCA line inputs and you get four. Four inputs on 3 jacks.

So i should be using the Sony/Philips Digital Interface jacks instead of the other input jacks, which i assume is the analog input?
So how is this, plug cd+g player into one of the s/pdif jacks and the mixer into the other s/pdif then connect one of the outputs from the maudiophile to the input on the mixer?
im just worried that i could burn something up by not connecting things right.

It depends what you are trying to record. If you have a CD player with SPDIF out, you could record that by routing SPDIF OUT (CD player) to SPDIF IN (M-Audio interface). The SPDIF OUT/IN setup will also work if you have an outboard effect with SPDIF digital OUT. Some reverbs, for example, like the Kurzweil Rumor or the TC Electronic M300 have SPDIF OUT connector.

If you are monitoring through your mixer, use the RCA analog OUT jacks. The mixer will not plug into the other SPDIF jack because that jack is a SPDIF OUT and because your mixer is analog (I assume). In other words, don't try to route analog out (Mixer) to SPDIF IN (M-Audio). Obviously, If you have a digital mixer with SPDIF OUT you can route the mixer SPDIF OUT (mixer) to SPDIF IN (M-Audio) Of course, that means that you won't be able to hook up your CD player at the same time.

An alternative route is to just record the vox while playing the cdg thru your player. Then rip the backing track from your cdg and import to Audacityinto track 2. Just make sure you sync the track.
