Do you mix any differently for an mp3 version of a song, if you know, for example, that you plan to upload an mp3 version to a website for folks here to listen to/critique? Like, would you back-off the effects a bit (e.g. reverb/chorus on the vocal)? I've just recorded/mixed my first song on my first multitrack system and I want to know if I need to adjust anything because of mp3 format nuances.

Thanks for any advice.

No. Instead I choose the MP3 encoding parameters carefully to avoid damaging the mix.

Just curious, since I have no experience in this yet, what are your parameters? Thanks.

I use the lame mp3 encoder. I start with the constant bitrate, 128 kbps preset. If that causes too many artifacts, I bump up the bitrate, and go to a variable bitrate if necessary. My thinking is that I want the smallest file that represents the music adequately. If it's too big, fewer people will be willing to take the time to download it.
