I was thinking of using one as a no-hastle way to get a little room sound.

The First Professinal Studio I ever recorded in used 3 PMZ"s as Overheads for Micing Cymbals (They were actually Nailed to the Wall behind the Drummer) and they worked Very well.....

If you are Trying to say record a band Practice or Record live with few Mics you Might also Try getting a couple Cheap Condensers or what I have been doing lately for recording Cymbals is I built a Couple Omni Electret Condensers useing High quality elements and a Modded wireing Schemetic which Lowers the Self Noise and they sound very Good and the Recorded audio sounds Exactly like is what is being Played without adding or accentuateing any frequencies which is Great if you have a Good Sound but not great if you have a Bad sound.....

The PMZ"s can also be Modded for better frequency responce and Lower Self Noise and Higher SNR but you might have a Hard time Finding Cheap PMZ"s these Days.....

Cheers

I like to use pzm's inside a kick drum. They sound pretty good ther. Another thing we tried once was tying a pzm around the drummers neck, like a necklace. This gave a cool drummer perspective sound, but I did have phase problems trying to blend it into the mix.

Bought 2 Radio Shack PZMs (They were made by Crown at the time though) about 10 years ago. I mounted (taped) each of them to a piece of 4'x4' plexiglass. Hung that over my drum kit. Not too bad. Taped one to the back of a 12 string then ran it into a voodoo valve. Ive heard of people taping them together and hanging them over drum kits. Then panning them l-r. Just had to get them to stay in the right position. Seems like everyone tapes them to something.
It seems to me that the bigger the area they are mounted to, the better the low end response was.
Never tried the mod to run off phantom power(they were battery powered).
