pwr supply noise - an afterthought...

I posted recently re pwr supply noise in my laptop...It just occurred to me that the built-in (Microsoft) s. cd. - just a cheap generic one - has no noise at all, and it's inside the computer. Everything I had read said to get a s. cd outside the computer for less noise. I don't get it?? BTW, the person who did respond was very helpful & thorough. Thanks.

s. cd?? what's that? and what has it got to do with a pwr supply?


Or am I stupid and shouldn't I post 10 minutes after I get out of bed?

to explain...

I have a laptop computer. The built-in s. card is clear sounding but not very high fidelity. I installed a good quality outboard (USB) s. cd. and hear a lot of noise that comes fr the laptop power supply. I didn't hear it before with the built in s. cd. I've always read that an outboard s. cd would have even less noise than the one the computer came with. ?
 
ok, now I'm sure that it wasn't stupid. (I think) I now understand what you're trying to say but what's that with those useless abreviations?! How is anyone supposed to know what you mean by s.cd? soundcard.. right?

You mean static noise? You're sure it's coming from the psu?
Tried the soundcard on another computer? (does the soundcard have a name by the way?)

Or is it just the microphone you're using that's picking up noise?

Questions raise more questions.
 
The sound card is Edirol UA-5.
No microphone as I'm not in recording mode.
I'm sure it's the power supply because when I unplug it from AC current & run on the battery, it's quiet.

Wrong Voltage?? Read the PSU specifications...
