Putting It To Bed

I've mucked about with re-recording & remixing this track for about 5 years.
I did a complete reworking with LifeLyrics (a sometimes denizen of the clinic) which worked really well as her harmonies and main vocal were excellent.
In the end I decided to end the cycle with a vocal closer to the 1976 original.
Remixed & mastered (so that I don't fiddle with it anymore essentiall).
Here is Whisper (fin de cycle).

I really like the cello ...is it a synth?...if so...how did you do it?
I like it but, it sounds to loud in the mix....it's nice and wet too....
alternatively, the vox is way too wet. Vox harmonys are ok too. I think if you lost the verb on the vox it would create a nice dynamic in between the instruments and the voice.
The pizzicato guitar is cool...I would like to hear that more than the cello(s). Is it a classical nylon string or is that a flanger or phaser on there?
At 2:30 (near the end) there is a synth instrument playing ....I am not a fan of that particular sound font...
retro vibe...pretty cool overall...
ciao.

Joro,
Real cellos one of which was recorded with a bug p/up & passed through a guitar effect unit hence the synthy sounds.
The vox were recorded wet. That is a classical/nylon string guitar.
Some interesting ideas offered but the track has been mastered and is done: put to bed!
Thanks for the comment.

I love the fact that you stick with these projects over time. Over the years, each one morphs and always improves.

I like this mix the best by far of any I remember hearing before. Super-reverberated throughout, but kind of cool that way for a tune like this.

I only remember lifelyrics being here a short time years ago, but she sounds good, if awfully far away, on this. Well done.

This is really something, Ray! I love every part of it. Sounds professional.

I've always liked the traditional feel of this tune, Ray.
Voice sounds a bit far back and the levels are a bit uneven, but then maybe that's what gives it its haunting character. I would really put this to bed, because it's a statement and it's complete. And a fine tune it is, too.:)

Vocals too wet for me, but if you're happy with it, it's good to go. I think you got a good overall mix with the cellos and guitar. It sounds big for having so few instruments.

I like lots of reverb. I know you said it's done but I would wish for just a little more level on the vocal. Great tune by the way.

I like the guitar the best - I'd have brought that forward with the vocals and layed the cello further back. .... of course that sounds okay until I try mixing my own stuff down.

I also like what heatmiser had to say. Sticking with it over the years demonstrates something about how it affects you, and that is way cool!

the cello almost sounds like a mellotron at bits...

the vocal is very wet but I must be one of the few fans of reverb...soak it baby

but for some reason this is stopping at 1.04 for me, i fucking hate this new mac...i cant seem to get anything to stream :(

if its in my dropbox ill check it there

ah got the soundclick link working

shes got a celtic twang about her voice...very haunting...great lyrics as per mate :guitar:

Like the real cellos. Would have liked the vocals a little higher. Agree, very haunting, vocals remind me a little of st ettiene (don't think that's spelt correctly). Nice and original.

Very cool! I really enjoyed the cellos and the vocals. I also felt like the bass in this song really held it together. Good work!

one "t" :)

and you're right they are a bit like Sarah Cracknells vocals, havent though of them in a long time...well spotted

Thanks Heat,
I stick with them - but 35 years is a tad to long: hence putting this one out of its misery.
LifeLyrics version was great - she had some terific harmony ideas. This one, with Miriam, for printed on reverb reasons amongst others, has a nice haunting feel so I went with it.

"I would really put this to bed, because it's a statement and it's complete."
that's it in a nutshell mate.
thanks very much for the compliments.

Greg, the wet, wet, wet was printed to track - a bit of a learning curve. Thanks for the mix comments. It does sound big in a few spots!

Track,
Thanks mate. If wishes were dishes I'd have a full table service!! Apart from being a reformed reverb junkie I'm also partial to buried vocals - somethings are beyond our ken!

Clam,
Which guitar? the nylon or 12 string? Doesn't matter: it's over now. I rather like the string cello stuff m'self.
This was, in real terms, the 1st song I co-wrote (had any part in writing in fact) so it has had an impact. I wish I could find the original vocalist - THEN I'd be tempted to make a "definitive" version. Only kidding (I hope).
