putting it all together

okay, lets say... i have my soundcard... a... m-audio 1010. And I have my pre's hooked up to it, and im using like n-track or something. How exactly does it work that you tell whatever program your using which channel goes to where from the soundcard to the program... i know its a noob question. but i just want to make sure I understand this...

its something like each one has a designation, and you give each channel on your program that designation so it knows where its getting info from?
