Yep. I have a computer that will not fire up. All you hear on startup is the hard drive trying to spin, then stopping, then trying to spin up again. I removed the hard drive and stuck it in the freezer for 1 hour and reinstalled it. Wow, fired right up. It is only good for 1 time as when the drive gets warm problem comes back. It at least will give you a chance to recover some projects or copy them to where ever. You can put drive back in freezer to get it cold again over and over . This helps if you have to load something like Norton Ghost in order to backup everything. :)

Hey, if it works better than screaming at it, I'm willing to try it.

It's only good for a cold boot.

Ba-dum ching!

He'll be here all night folks, or, who knows, your luck could change. :D

I had an old PC...

that had one boot copy on it that would boot on warm days, and another boot copy on it that would boot on cold days. I kid you NOT!
   ;)

This is the service tech's trick to get past a sticktion problem. Freezing the drive tends to break the sticktion between drive heads and the platters, or in the bearings.

The drive is usually good for 1.00 uses after it fires up. Have your GHOST program ready to evacuate that drive, cuz it most likely will never spin up again.

Be sure to freeze in an air removed bag, then thaw completely. Don't want any condensation inside the drive. I used this trick a number of times this year for my client's machines. Worked some of the time.

.

I disagree. My experience has been that they're good for 1.00099 uses after it fires up. :D

norton ghost

I have program installed. I managed to backup the entire computer. Just a 20 gig HD. I am having a hell of a time figuring out ghost! I have all the backup on an external hard drive but ghost does not seem to be able to find it. Can someone walk me through how they use ghost?

You need to boot the computer with the ghost disk and browse to the image

Brain fart!

I put a firewire card in the computer and figured it would do a plug and play thing. It does not recognise it. Duh! I should have know that. Won't recognise it in recovery mode. So, I plugged my external HD with all the backup material by ISB. Now it see's the drive with all the backup files. All seems to be going well.....I hope!

The magic way to use Ghost is with BART-PE.

Seek and ye shall find.
