i've got the sm57 and i've been messing around to get a punk rock guitar sound. I've got a superstrat send trough a marshall vs80, which sounds awsome to my opinion. But recording it fucks it up. Any suggestions were i should place the mic and how i should eq it (to make it sound "right" :))

mic position is very important. Try lots of positions, and find the sound you like. You have all of the right ingredients to find a sound that you like, you just have to find the right position. I like to mic right on the grillcloth (or very close) straight in about 1/2 way between the middle and edge of the cone. Experiment and you will find what you like.

Hope it goes well.

tnx dude, i'll give a try tomorrow cuz my parrents are sleeping right now :)

Other important considerations...

What are you recording into?

What are you using for a Mic preamp?

errr i record it with a pc, sb live soundcard and a stage line mixer, dunno if it sux but it works for drums though ...

sb live isn't the greatest. might want seperate preamp , dunno bout the stage line mixer. Can you post an mp3 of what you recorded? Acoustics of the room and placement of the mics are important.

<-- I recorded this little sound clip from propagandhi ... don't make fun outta my guitar playing ... héy i'm hardly 16 !

There is digital distortion on this clip. You have the input level set too high. In a digital recording medium, like your pc/mac, if you see red lights, you are clipping and you get this distortion. The goal is to set the levels as high as possible without getting it too loud. The tone sounds good, but the distortion is the problem here. Hope this helps.

Btw, about eq. It is a good idea to spend some time at the tracking stage getting your sound right, and use as little eq as possible later. My goal is to use no eq at all, but I still do sometimes.

hmmm i thought it was the eq which made it sound so thin and err ... sucky. tnx for the info i'll try to mess 'round with my mixers output which is prolly to high
