Punk drummers not liked?

You guys mention great drummers all the time, and dont get me wrong, i agree. But how come you never hear of any punk bands' drummer being noticed for their drumming ability. I dont think any of you would notice good technique and talent unless you were a longtime punk fan. I think the top 2 punk drummers are definately the drummer from NOFX, and/or the drummer from Lagwagon(no i dont know their names, only their music stands out)

The drummer for Fugazi (Brendan, I believe). Colin of Dag Nasty. Mackie, who drummed for the Cro-Mags.
Bill Stevenson of the Descendents and All. Sammy of Youth of Today. Luke of Gorilla Biscuits. Alan Cage of Quicksand and Burn. These are the guys I remember.

I come from the old school. :D

There were a whole lot of jazz drummers that (in some respects) burned todays drum jocks of notoriety....and we have never heard of them because they were overshadowed by Rich, Krupa, Blakey, Williams, Jones, etc.
 
Well, it's probably because most of us don't listen to that kind of music.
I never cared for most punk rock, and the bands that I did like (bands like The Misfits....who essentially evolved into a Heavy Metal band when they made their comeback, Dr. Know, Poison Idea, and several others) all tended to be essentially metal bands who started out as poor musicians, but as they began to play better, they essentially became metal.

I never really was into the so-called "pop punk" (which isn't punk at all......such as Blink 182 cough cough Sum41 cough cough) but I did like the Ramones (again-1 step away from metal...including long hair) through the late 70's to the early 90's.

The Sex Pistols? I loved them. They were a great band, and Paul Cook wasn't bad as a drummer, but he definitely was not a master of his instrument.

I liked the bands I listed a lot, but none of them had outstanding drummers....except for the last version of The Misfits....CHUD is a great drummer....and Poison Idea..... Thee Hippy Slayer from Poison Idea is one of the best drummers around...he's a freak of nature.....but if he had been thin instead of fat, he would have been in a metal band...he just didn't have the "image" to make it in metal, even though he is every bit as good as Dave Lombardo.


But, the truth is, most of us don't listen to punk, while we have all listened to Rush.

My favourite is the drummer from Strung Out, his name is Jordan Burns. If you are playing punk rock and you want it to be good, you Must have a killer drummer, no question. Tony Polermo from Pulley (and formerly Ten Foot Pole) is also great. B.T.W., if anybody is interested in playing drums on a song or two of mine, let me know. I could send you scratch tracks with a click (or not, up to you). My friend that plays moved away, and I need somebody for a while (could be quite a while) until I get better.
 
BTW Punx, to answer your question, the vast majority of the members here have very little interest in punk rock. There are precious few of us. Don't get me wrong, though. I am addicted to this place because of the very knowledgable, funny people.

Funny, all the guys I mentioned above were thin. Granted, East Coast Hardcore was more "hip" and carried more ideology than East Coast metal back then.

If you are talking abou Tre, I agree. He plays simple stuff, but it is just right for the song.
 
If you're talking about great drummers who also happen to be in punk bands you have to mention John Wright of NoMeansNo. If any of you punks out there want to hear a real drummer who plays kick ass fills and licks in a punk band you need to hear NoMeansNo.

George Hurley - fIREHOSE, Minutemen. They were considered punk in the 80's but these days the 'new punks' would probably call them jazz because of their resistance to anything that doesn' play the 4/4 punk rock box of power chords. Hell, the Sex Pistols, X, The Plimsouls, The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag would never be punk these days - they weren't fast enough.

After playing drums for 20 years, I could not tell you the name of ONE "punk" drummer. I could tell you many names of drummers that are punks though!! :D

The ony one I could even mention at the risk of sounding like I haven't got a clue is Jimmy Degrasso. Hasen't he been playing with Johnny Rotten for a long time?
 
i don't want to get into an argument of what is and isn't punk, but i think Travis Barker is one hell of a drummer and seems to know what he is doing.

Travis Barker? Dude, you don't know anything about punk. (Just kidding :D).

What about the drummer for G.G. Allin's group? He was absolutely horrible, but he played naked. And the song leader (G.G.) threw his own fecal matter at the crowd. Now that's PUNK RAWK!

I am a longtime NoMeansNo fan. I saw them a little while ago, and they blew me away. John is super talented. Rob is quite a good bass player as well. Have you ever seen them?
 
How about Topper Headon of The Clash. Before he got heavily into smack he weas about as good as they come. A real musician as well as being a very versatile and skilled drummer.....the drummer for a band who touched so many musical bases would have to be pretty damn flexible and he made it sound like he had been playing each style all his life.

Anyone in any doubt should listen to their live album "From here to Eternity".

Paul Cook of the Pistols was a decent drummer at best but his style suited the bands anarchistic sound brilliantly. Whoever said the pistols couldn't play was talking out of their arse, Sid excepted of course!

yes, I only saw them once in seattle at the OK hotel in '90. they blew my mind. I stood on the side and just stared in amazement as they tore it up from note 1 to the end. rob IS an incredible bass player, you got that right! they're one of my all time favorite bands and they kill any of this punk music that's around today. geez, it's even arguable that nomeansno is even punk. some people call them jazz at times. if they're jazz they have to be the most aggressive, angry and twisted jazz artists of all time :-)

You are so very right about the wright brothers from nomeans no ,I have seen them 3 times here in Australia and that guy burns.I belive his father was a jazz drummer and john plays with trad grip and he can just about do any thing.I have heard him do bill bruford(King Crimson era) style stuff and his jazz is out of this world('tired of waiting' from the albun called 'wrong').One thing I like about them is the stage set up with the drums on the right side of the stage facing across the stage and then bass rig in the middle and guit on the left,weird but by golly it works.
As for other drummers how about Earl Hudson from Bad Brains now theres a gut who wrote a few chapters in the book of punk drumming.Also Derik Bostrom from the Meat Puppets(yes they are punk when it comes down to it)he showed me what a lefty on a rightys kit can do.
One more killer skins man is Spit Stix from FEAR he is very versitile but pure animal check out' forien policy' from 'FEAR the record'

Of course purest drummers will scoff but there is alot to be said about MEAT AND POTATOES it still is a good meal.
 
What about Jordan Burns from Strung Out??
He lays down those double bass fills like Dave Lombardo or Paul Bostaph would!!
 
Thank you Keith. I mentioned Jordan earlier in this thread, and I was hoping I wasn't on everyone's ignore list. I cannot believe it took this ling for someone else to mention him. He kicks ass. I saw them this summer, and he was fucking amazing. I talked to him after the show, and he was a really nice guy too.

I had never heard them until about 2 summers ago and a friend of mine put in Twisted by Design and it blew me away!!
So basically the man is my idol - before I heard him I didn't even play that much because there wasn't a style I was going for, but after hearing them...shit man, it was an epiphany!!

Man if I had a good way to record I'd try to play on your tracks for you. I have access to a digital 8-track that my band used to record a demo this summer, but that's really it. If you want to see how much I can't play like Jordan, check us out a mp3.com.
