Hey, check out my very short Tom clip. I've been working on getting my Toms to punch thru in the mix.

3 Part Tom Clip

Part 1 - Dry Tom Sample

Part 2 - Part 1 + Reverb Added

Part 3 - Part 2 + Saturation, Compression and Slight EQ

It would depend on the mix whether or not these will punch through. They do sound good

I don't usually have a problem getting toms to punch through when they're by themselves. Most problems creep up when you have snare and cymbals bleeding into the tom mics and making your extreme eq/compression/saturation type stuff go nuts.

Of course, I've managed to improve my mic placement a bit, and I try to craft the drum sound using all of the mics (so that if I need more highs on the toms, I know that I can cut some from the snare or cymbals, etc)

Drums are fun!

Too be honest with you, that doesn't sound much like a tom to me. It's sounds more like a kick. Is that an actual recording you made, or did you use a sample?

agreed...up with the mids maybe

I think the pitch and punch is fine. It sounds like alot of dampening to me. Everyone here pretty much knows I don't believe in muffling. Try with the heads a little more wide open and you won't need so much verb.

Good tuning being a major factor no doubt. :)

You never mentioned WHICH tom, BTW!

I was assuming it was a 16x16 floor tom. If this is a 10x6 rack tom, it's tuned too low.

yeah, I guess. it's a sample from one of Farviews floor toms.

Why do you say that?

Not that it doesn't sound like something I would do. If it is mine, it would be one of the Tama Artstar II 18x16 maple Floors tuned really, really low.

Because it's a sample from one of your CDs. I'm not at my computer so I don't know which one.

So you are keiffer?
yeah, I'm changing my name everywhere. I happened to be logged on this machine as Sonixx and posted before I realized...

the Sample is: PRockstar Tom 3

That is a 16x16 Tama Rockstar with Remo pinstripes tuned low. EQ'd and compressed.

The unprocessed version of the same tom is: GRockstar Tom 3

It's all subjective but I think that tom is dead. But hey, to each his own. I like my toms to ring out more. Even for rock. Now, metal? Different story.
