I've been using outboard gear to record for the last few years. Lately I have been slowly transitioning to software. I've been working with a band this past month. The guitarist has some really long lead passages and he just can't seem to nail them as "a whole". So were at the point where time is money (isnt that always the case) and he just wants to go in and break it up in sections/overdub.
So here goes my questions.......

-In the old school world of Adats you can set the punch "in" and "Out" points on the fly while playback is happening with your remote. Is it possible to do this with adobe audition? Im guessing there would be some type of Keystroke to set the In and the out.

-I realize you can zoom in and set the points but i find it more difficult to find the exact point looking at teh waveform when punching in on distorted guitar. Its easier for me to just listen to the drums to catch the start/end point of a section or "bar".

-If this is not possible, what do you guys find is the easiest method for overdubbing in Audition 1.5? Also is there some way to set an "Auto" crossfade so when you punch in it automatically applies the predetermined crossfade.

thanks
chris

Well..

In CEP 2.1 there is a little "boxing glove" like mitt looking button...
on the top row of buttons in Multitrack view...

You can select however much you want to "punch" by highlighting, and then pressing the little boxing glove...

It will take the selected portion of the waveform and turn it pink(recordable)..

you set the cursor before it and press record, and only that little section will record...

Just some advice for those curious, i know this may not be the best route for you...

I'd suggest doing "good" takes, (duh) but keeping lets say, 2 or three of the REAL good ones...as judged by YOUR ear DURING recording..

then, just cut out, envelope, basically MIX all the good parts together..

Ive done it alot with long vocal verses...its not "cheating" if it sounds good :D

..just when you go to play LIVE...uhoh  hehe hope this helped...

Crispy- thanks for the info. When you "Punch In" the way you describe, does it crossfade automatically? Or do you still hear the little digital pop.
I have been comping different takes together like you describe but I would just rather punch it and be done like I would do in the world of outboard. Too many options for some bands is not a good thing.
Thanks for your help....

yea there shouldnt be a "pop", unless the cutoff is kind of sudden or dramatic,

you should zoom in real close and envelope a fade at the end of the block, to do away with the "pop"..

*I'm not sure if it "automatically" crossfades, im sure someone around here should know how to set that up. (I vaugely recall a crossfade button on top?)

-Just make sure if your using the punch in, to have your guitarist playing "along with himself" in the headphones, before the selected punch in...
to knida sync him up with the rhythm...

**anybody else??

Options > Settings > Mulititrack has two possibly relevant settings - the "Crossfade time" - try increasing it (default is probably 30ms, try say 100ms) - also "Auto Zero-Cross Edits" is worth a tick.

There are "smoothing" options in the the Data tab but these apply only to edit view I believe.
