I was wondering if you guys know? Is the teac/tascam model rc-30p the only footswitch that will work with the most 4-track recorders, or will a universal one work. I have the following 4-track models but no footswitch yet: 424 mkiii, 414 , and the tascam porta-one ministudio (from '85)
Thanks,
Aaron

If it uses a 1/4" plug on the footswitch, any one should work. I use on that was supplied as the "sustain" pedal on a cheap Yamaha keyboard.

You can get one at radio shack for $9-$12. Just look where ever the keyboards are at.

Thanks, Guys!

Thanks, Guys! Now I remember someone telling me that a while back. I was just afraid a generic footswitch might not work with all of my 4-tracks.

Aaron. There is an issue here.
Now I am NOT 100% sure, (please, somebody confirm, who knows for sure!)
but if I am correct for your portas you'd need a nonlatching normally open switch. Which means that it is similar to a doorbell push button, you press - it is "ON", you let it go - it is "OFF".
Now, not all momentary nonlatching foot pedals are such. Some of them are normally closed.
Some of them (like Roland DP-6, as example) can be easyly modified one way or the other or made to be 'universal' with a switch added.

...

You need a normally-open momentary contact switch with a 1/4" plug.

(When set up with tracks record-enabled)...
Press it once & release, and the record function switches "on".
Press it again & release and it switches "off".;)

Yeah, take care:
I bought a Roland switch for my Yamaha MT100 & that pedal takes a double click to open & the same again to close - no massive prob but it does require that extra bit of awareness and little more synch'ing to drop in on the spot.

I've tried an old Roland foot switch for my Fostex E-16 & have to press twice to turn record on & off!

I still can't work out what switch I need? As the Fostex 8051 footswitch recommended in the manual is discontinued?

I suppose it's the momentary one?

Quite right, the momentary is what you want for most machines with logic control transport. The buttons on the machine are momentary as well. Here's a related reply from the Tascam section from a while ago. :)
