Does anyone know if there is a way to get the Pultec Pro EQ color without buying a UAD-1 card? It appears this is one of the holy grail colors in digital audio today.

Yeah it's really easy, buy either a Tube Tech Pultec or a Manley Pultec clone.

I don't want to sound... I don't know... Let me put it this way -

The price for the entire UAD collection is cheap just for the Pultec plug alone.

IMO, YMMV, etc.

The pultec on the URS plugin's sounds pretty nice.

You get the benefit of the Amek, API, and NEVE too!

I love the URS plugins, but I like the Pultec on the UAD better. Out of curiosity, which URS is the Amek? I always though it was Neve, API, and SSL.

Ahhh..maybe I am confusing the Mix EQ then. It looks more like a Amek thing than a SSL thing.

Looks like an AMEK to me too. Just that the second midband doesnt go low enough

I gather the answer is "no" then.

Why don't you try the URS demo? Hear for yourself.

I have mastered a few CD's via "real" Manley verisons of Pultec's. To tell you the truth, the UAD stuff wasn't as cool. What little I tried out the URS Pultec, it sounded about as good as the UAD.

for my direct x ass, the UAD-1 pultec plugin is the most troublesome plug on the card, so I hardly ever use it. For me the pultec was always a tracking thing ( and one of the VERY few times I would ever commit something like an eq or compressor to tape)

I'm assuming that URS's product: "URS FullTec" is their version of the Pultec, right?

Yes. They also have the BLT which is based on the Pultec, but has far less features.

And by the way, the "S" series eq appears to be the SSL emulation.

From what I was reading, I hope I understood this correctly, but if you buy the "Fulltec" you get the ($99) BLT free...

Price TDM $ 499.99 Native $249.99 - Now includes the URS BLT 2 band Program EQ

I was thinking of the S series one. Haven't used the mix EQ much.

I really like the UAD pultec pro. As John said, it's worth the price of the whole card. I also get a lot of use out of the 1176SE and the LA2a too. If my UAD card broke today, I'd buy a new one by tomorrow at noon.

** I'd like to add that I also suggest clients pay an extra $500 to have their album mastered with a real Massive Passive instead of the plugin... it's that much better. The UAD is a step in the right direction but the Manley gear can't be replace at this point.

Do these plugs really capture the character of the units they emulate? Even to just a slight degree.

I'm surprised there is no enterprizing software engineer who can duplicate the sonic colors of these vintage pieces and offer them as a plugins. I'm not at a level where I'm up to spending 500+ on a pc card or more for the real deal hardware. If there was a coloring plugin available you could run it with a clean eq and you'd have a sudo sortof simulation. Thats good enough for what I do.

Frigtheningly so

in some cases

Ive owned or do own all the goodies they attempt to model there...except the fairchild. The 1176 behaviour is surprising

I may be near Bombfactory Eric as the top UAD-1 haters, but I own the card and I do believe the behaviour there on the compressors is scarily spot on

I wonder about the same thing as above...Exactly how can that damn EQ be so good!?...argh.
