Searching for the sound
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on "color scheme"
psychology (lol). I am in the: 'pick the colors & fabrics' stage of building
my space and I've read that the common wisdom for small rooms is that a light colored
ceiling will give the impression of a larger space.

However, I have seen many studios with light walls and dark
ceilings...

In your experience, what works best in 8 ft ceiling sized rooms?

Cheers
Kevin.

IMHO - go for a dark ceiling when you have a low ceiling (8' like yours) It basically deaqn't get noticed and you concentrate on the lighter colours like the walls.

I'm considering purple walls (accented by track lights). The floor (concrete) will probably be a dark color like dark/black cherry. I saw this somewhere on the web several months ago and it looked great. Wish I could remember the site. Anyhow, what recommendation would you make for the ceiling color? It will be a "cathedral" ceiling starting at about 8.5 feet each side and peaking at about 13.5 feet. Material will be suspended ceiling with 2'x4' acousitical tiles set in. Also, can you paint this ceiling tile or will it loose it's properties?

Hi Kevin, well I'm an oddball. I have a small 9 x 11 bedroom studio. My 8' ceiling is painted dark flat crimson/wine red. My walls are covered with slatwall graphics covered with silver laminate,(the slatwall has all kinds of brackets for guitars, cables etc.) wall areas around them are light grey paint/ and dimensional stainless steel and gloss black laminate graphics' and gloss black laminate 3/4" x 12"w cable trough covers. I love it cause its dark and intimate. Now, most people go OHHHHHHHHH when they come in, cause of the contrasting lighted colored plex on my console and equipment racks, but my wife said, keep the door closed. Ha! But of course, my little room is for me, not the public. Besides, I like it. And color to me is more important than the ILLUSION OF SPACE. My 2 cents.

Brighter is better in my opinion. Personally I get depressed working in dark colored rooms for long periods. And a mix of lights - fluorescent, halogen, incandescent - helps even out the spectrum and make things more pleasant as well.

Colorwise, I think it's every man for himself.

As far as lighting, track lights with gels that can be changed, definitely lava lamps strategically placed - I use two different lighting systems - It's hard to "vibe" in a hospital white, super-bright room, and it's impossible to find wires or solder things in a low light "vibe" room. I use flourescents ONLY for work lights (don't need any MORE electrical noise), along with halogens. Double or triple gel sheets to control dimming without SCR's adding to the EMI/RFI - Two blue's and a red or two makes a SUPER purple - if your walls are light, beige or white, you can control the color with gels. You almost can't have too much light when trying to fix something... Steve

HAAHAHAHAHAH!!! YEAAAA Steve, I love it. I have 3. And I bought 5 of em at yard sales, to tear apart and use to custom make lava tube graphics Its part of my rooms dimensional/graphics/diffusers/absorber/llighting/ mic boom truss art thingamajig! Wheeew! I found some 4' glass, chemical lab tubes for the liquid.( Part of the diffuser) Haven't finished them yet. They will be in 4 planes, the rearwall, sidewalls and ceiling. Remember, this is not a studio. Its an experiment. It makes use of useless creativity that would otherwise be spent chasing little white balls in a park, or thowing big black balls down a wood alley. Besides, its funner than hell to play music in here. Ha!

Sanctuary

I want my space (which is mostly for my private use) to feel different than any other place I regularly spend time. The walls will be red and the ceiling is similar to a sea foam green. It is a large space so the colors aren't so "in your face". My choices seem to get a reaction out of everyone so we'll see how it turns out. We primed last night and the top coat goes on tomorrow. I'm not sure what color the carpet will be yet I have a few choices.

There will be another area in my space that is more restful. I have an idea for a mural depicting the Elvis '68 come back special that I think would really be cool. My sister is a muralist and this sort of thing is right up her alley. I'm not an Elvis nut but when I was a kid I saw this guy on TV in black leather playing an electric guitar while women beamed up at him and made an immediate career choice. I just need to get her out here to do it.

Over all, I think the colors and lighting can be as important to the work that gets done as what you do the work on. It is a big part of the equation in my book.

Cheers,
RD
