I CAN SMELL EM!
A PRS for $399 ????????

I don't know?

Has anyone played it?
Does anyone know anything about it?

The two I played were worth the $400. It is just that, a great $400 guitar. I would have no problem adding it to my arsenal.

Of course it is subjective, IMO - Korean made, good balance, nice action, great sustain. I would get the one with saddles though. One of those models does not have bridge saddles.
I ended up getting a Dillion though, also Korean made, but had archtop, more eye candy and it was $427.

Here's a pic. http://home.pacbell.net/markmars/gear.html

Definately, try it out since some guys don't like the feel.

Bighand

I played it while auditioning some regular PRS's and wasn't too impressed. Take that for what it's worth considering I was playing it in between high-priced PRS's.

Also, keep in mind that Santana's probably aren't going to hold their value the way a higher priced one does.

I'm a big fan of cheap guitars, but I was not impressed with the PRS Snatana. I can't really put my finger on the reasons that I didn't like it. It seemed to play okay. It just didn't seem to have any life (for lack of a better word).

For my money, I look at the low end Gibsons.

I get a feeling that they are hoping people will buy it just because it has a PRS logo on the headstock regardless of playability, quality or anything else.
I dunno,... I think I'd be better off with an Epi.

hey 64 firebird,

have you checked out the epi 64 (may be '63) firebird IV's. $499 in musicians friend cat. now thats a petty guitar

i've been REAL tempted to get one...but im just not going to buy a guitar i can't play 1st

noe of the stores around here have one

It's made in Korea, which means it's a Samick.
(Samick makes guitars for just about every major manufacturer)

You'd be better off with a top of the line Samick for that amount of money.
They give their own brand name the best woods, best electronics, and the highest attention to detail and quality control.
They're great guitars for the money.

An early 80's Japanese-made Tokai guitar (Love Rock, Springy Sound, etc.) is also an awesome axe.
They're the best "bang-for-your-buck" guitars ever made.
The only problem is finding one! ;)

Yes, I've seen the Epi 63 Firebird VIIs and I've even played one or two. They sound pretty good, but I didn't like the wammy bar. They should use one that locks (I think all wammy guitars should lock). But, then in wouldn't have that ventage look and (out of tune) sound.

If you want to know how it compairs to the "real thing" (BTW mine is a III). The neck seemed a little slimer to me, more strat like than like my old one. Also, it has a set neck. The old ones were neck through body. The tuning keys are a little harder to get to because they point down instead of straight out like the old ones. I don't think the sustain was as good but that's likely because my old one has had a lot more time for the wood to dry. The Epi has binding on the neck, my old one dosen't. The finish on the EPI seemed a little gooey, maybe it hadn't been cured the way it should have.

Over all, if I didn't have mine I'd most likely buy one. But, if your thinking about getting one you really should play it first. Firebirds are BIG guitars. Maybe 1/4 longer than a strat. If your not a tall guy (over 6 feet) you may find it to be a long reach. Also, Firebirds are not balanced very well. Heavy on the neck side.

i've played a firebird a few times....a gibson...i liked it. I've always been a total johnny winter freak (since the early 70's). i think the gibson firebird and the fender strat are the 2 coolest guitar designs ever concieved.
there was a bicentinial gibson reissue firebird a few weeks ago on e-bay (suburst, gold hardware, special insignia on the 12th fret, the "gibson" insignia on the headstock was even raised gold lettering). I wanted that guitar SOOOOO BAAAAD...but i was buying recording equipment at the time and the bid got over 3 grand so i didn't bid

thanks for telling me about the epi firebird....i was going to buy one sight unseen but i have yet to read a good review on one...such a shame a pretty guitar like that not being up to snuff

Did I give you that impression? Overall, I think the Epi FB is a hell of a good guitar. The only real defferance between the Epi and the Gibson is the neck joint, the finish and the tuning keys. None of these things effect the playabilty of the guitar.

it looks like they could do a neck-thru on the epi firebird...that was the main feature of the gibsons

Neck thru is a difficult (read that expencive) process. The set neck is a good comprimise to keep the cost down.
