hey... im in sort of a confused state... i have been savin quite a bit of money... and i want to get a bigger and better sound card... i currently have the delta 66... its nice.. but i need more ins... and i looked at the digi 001 ... this seems like it would work... but... its kinda pricy... do u think i will hear a jump in quality if u use this unit compared to the delta 66?

Also.. it has 2 pres... any one use them before? comments on them... and the main thing... it can only go up to 48 khz recording... not 96.. which my delta 66 card could do... do u think this is a major factor on whether or not to buy the unit? comments on that? will that make a lrage difference? ok... any help very much appreciated.. took me a year to sqeeze this cash.. so im makin sure i know for sure whether i should get it.

o ya.. i have been using Col edit pro 2.0 for a year now... is that a rough transition from that to protools LE ?

The digi 001 is kinda outdated now it's like 3 or 4 years old and in digital recording that's along time. It might be usefull for someone who wants to get an introduction to the pro-tools platform for a relativly fair price, but there are better alternatives. I think your money would be better spent on something else. I can tell you that I use two aardvark q-10's and cubase sx and it works very well for me. If you want check out my site for a more detailed list of our gear hear is the link... www.2020audio.ca

Another thing to rember is that the pro-tools software that comes with the digi001 is kind of limited in what it can do, but as I said it would be a great introduction to the pro-tools platform, and you could take the skills you learn from using it and be able apply them in almost any pro studio and run a session. That platform has pretty much become the industry standard. Just afew things to think about. Take it easy.

002 ?

hmm... ok .. im not gonna get the 001... howabout the 002 racknmount version... will this be better? is this outdated? ...this comes with prtools LE .... is this still limited in the software? it records at 96 khz... and it has 4 pres... are they good? and say i wanted to record bass directly into the unit... will it be mono?

Pro Tools LE allows up to 32 voiceable tracks, plus plenty more that aren't voiced. So 32 tracks at a time. TDM systems add support for surround mixng and Timecode stuff, and a few other nice features, but LE is more powerful than it ever was.

I have the 002, which has the same electronics as the rack version.

Its sweet. The pres convertors kick the teeth out of everything else I've used, included the MIX system at work. It just sounds clean. The pre inputs can be swtiched to line or instrument inputs, so you're covered with the bass.

Pro Tools will be a transition, but its VERY simple to use. It took me about a day to transition over from Cubase SX and a couple more weeks to feel like it was second nature. Just load in the sample session and go through the electronic manuals are installed with it. Its easy.

Take care,
Chris

alright man.. thanks ALOT.. you made me confident on whether or not to go for it... do u have any recording samples u could show me and tell me wat gear u used? .. and so ur sayin.... is .. i can record bass to the comp stereo ? i thought in 1 was L and in 2 was R ...?

playback???

hey... its not a pci card... so how would i play back? i guess keep my delta 66 or somethin in there???

o ya... will i hear a quality difference from using the delta 66 and the 002 rack?

I'll second everything Chris said...

Digi 001 uses PT LE, which is a more than capable software tool. I transitioned from n-Track to PT LE and it was cake. It's a very intuitive interface. And there's really nothing "out-of-date" about the digi001. The software gets updated periodically (they just released PT LE 6.1.1) and most of the hardware components are the same stuff they still use in the later versions of the digi products. (i.e. pres, convertors, etc.)

I got mine for 600 bucks at Mars Music, but you can usually get them nowadays for 500 some bucks on eBay.

I'm pretty satisfied with the results I've gotten from the 001. I used to have a Delta 44 (almost identical to the Delta 66) along with n-Track, and my results are noticeably better. You can check out some tunes on my website. The last two songs (7 & 8) were done with my old gear, the rest were done with the digi001. For sample of "full band" stuff, you can also check out my band's website. Those were all done on my brother's digi001.

Yes, it's a PCI card. You won't need anything but the 001 and PT. ('cept a mic, of course. :p)

The Digi 002 rack is essentially a firewire interface. You record AND playback with it. You'll hook your speakers up to the 002 just like you would any other audio interface.

Pro Tools, as far as know, will never recognize anything but digi hardware. :( It won't even see your Delta, unfortunately.

While you are welcome to check out my website and listen to the tunes linked from there, I haven't posted any mixs for a loooong time and I think everything I currently have up was recorded before I got the Digi. Its all Cubase and a Tascam us-428.

And your bass will go into any of the 4 preamped inputs on the 002. You can select in Pro Tools if you then want to record it to a stereo or mono track. I do mono tracks for that kind of thing.

Oy, its late. I'm fried. I hope that wasn't too disjointed...

Take care,
Chris

Yes the digi002 would be a wise decision if ya got the bucks. Gota love those firwire interfaces, just plug in and go!

mic pres

if u had to compare the pres on the 002 to a popular pre of same quality.. what common pre of equal value would u pick?

Focusrite makes the pres for the digi's. They're decent pres for the money. I don't know exactly what pre to compare them to. They're pretty clean, though. I also use a Focusrite Penta Platinum pre, and it's very similar to the digi's pres.

ok.. all sounds good.. might have the cash for it around christmas or so... i have a behringer eurorack ub 2222 pro... i have been using those pres for my recordings.. i will till i get the 002... is that a big upgrade..? the 002 pres after using behringer mixer pres..( board cost around 250- 300 )... im hoping to hear a drastic difference once i get the 002 after using delta 66 and behringer 300 $ board.

I did a song using a Behringer mixer (602A) and Delta 44, and then re-did the same song on a digi001 using the digi's pres. You can check it out on my site. The song is Tell Her This. You can decide for yourself if you can hear a difference in the pres. It should be a fairly accurate example of the type of upgrade you're looking to make.
