Proteus vs. Roland

I'm looking for a rack module - and for now am considering the EMU Proteus 1000 or the EMU Proteum 2000 or a Roland XV5050.

Anyone have any pros or cons they can offer???

I want to stay in the $500-$700 range and my sound priority is ralatively accurate accoustic sounds (piaons, organs horns, etc.) since I produce mostly pop/country type material - thus I don't need ambiant or dance/hiphop sounds.

I've heard most of the sounds on the XV5050 and while I like them - there are many which duplicate my XP30. I have had very little hands on with the two Proteus units.

I already have a sampler - but I like the conveniance of quickly dialing up sounds (vs. loading samples) in particular when I have paying customers looking over my shoulder.

Are there other modules in that price range you would suggest??? I which they had a Motiff module!!!

Proteus2 is easily programmable, 2 sets of midi, 128 voice polyphony, lots of upgrade room, I rate the sounds about 7.5/10.
Go with the proteus 2 if you go proteus.

I don't have experience with the xv5050, but I have a jv1010, which is a little cheaper ($399). It's downfalls are limited progammability... OK so maybe it just has one. I give the sounds 9.5/10. They are GREAT sounding.
If you just need great sounds and don't need or want to tweak them out, check out the 1010. It's a great buy for the money.

...or look at the newer XV-2020 which is the JV-1010's replacement.
 
Don't have time to expand on this but if acoustic emulations are what you're looking for you owe it to yourself to check out Kurzweil. The ME-1 MicroEnsemble goes for $400 and is a kick ass little unit (I own it and would be happy to give you a review if you'd like). Also check out the PC2R which is the ME-1's big brother and offers expansion capability (the ME-1 has no expansion).

The Proteus 2000 is an excellent unit. has a lot of great sounds. 32 midi channels, 6 outs, excellent. the sounds are great allround, strings, pianos, leads, etc. i have mine loaded with the XL1 Xtreme Lead card and the MoPhatt card. awesome.
 
Protius 2000 is a fine module, and is priced right. I prefere the XV3080 mainly on the strength of the vast variety of expansion boards available. I've seen them in GC's for $899.
