Alright so I'm struggling a lot to find a really tight mix for the tracks I've been making. I'm looking for feedback on which mix sounds best to everyone. It seems every time I try and tweak something, something else suffers. One track might be too loud while another might sound quieter but clips like crazy! Here is my site: SoundClick artist: fingerball - page with MP3 music downloads
this has been really bothering me! It's between the first four songs. Which is better? Whats wrong with them? How can i fix them? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Dill Hell - main guitar is overpowering the secondary guitar when that comes in later in the song. Your snare sounds like wet cardboard and yoru cymbals are not really there... are you running this through a compressor to get extra volume and crushing the life out of it?

Easy Pill - same criticism. Secondary guitar might as well not be there... try a bit of panning.... snare sounds less like ass than in Dill Hell, but still not right, cymbals a bit better than Dill Hell but still a bit of an afterthought.

Same thing third track, Wide Open - all variations on a theme...

I will say you have some excellent riffs going there though - just need to sort out the overall sound.

Sounds like it was mixed by the guitarist... ???

Haha yeah i am indeed the guitarist, this is all me. i program the drums, record the 'bass' (pitch shifted guitar, cant afford a real bass atm) and then just throw guitar over top. I appreciate the input! That's why I'm here. I know my snare sounds like crap, and i suppose you can't really tell me much without knowing what I'm working with, but here is a start: I'm working with superior drummer 2.0 and revalver. I really hope some one knows where I am coming from and can tell me what I can do to help the mixes, now that I know what is the problem with them. As for an in depth analysis, its the guitar tone bad? the drums clearly need work, how can I fix em? is the 'bass' bad? etc

dill hell - it's got good structure and sound, and never did anything but get the tune done. Sing to it or not, your choice. But I would have brought up that stray guitar at the end a bit more. I liked it by the second listen. no hell worse than that of dill

man, you metal guys - where do you get to improvise? that why god gave metal bands singers - you have to improvise to find a good one lol

easy pill - this one has the claustrophobic speed without the crash...I like when you strap wings to it and the band sounds little an intermittent spark plug - you're onto something at that point

wide open - good structure and sound again - in terms of sound, if you're getting this with the room and the gear you've got then your next step up is gonna be fun; but in terms of the song, I like dill hell better.

easy pill and wide open both do that thing where you take it down into some quiet music toward the end. I'm going to listen to dill hell again and ask myself if you should have done that 'take it down and quiet thing' on that. If I think the answer's yes, you're not gonna like it... okay, listened again...No, see that one's got that great big loping grandeur that's right sir I claim it has grandeur. I like grandeur. Okay, could you have taken it down for some quietness toward the end? Well, yeah you could've if you'd wanted to, but why bother the tune does fine on its own.

back door - man I'm glad I don't listen to this kinda music very often lol well, at least the music hits you with very well-fashioned fathammered softsound. But why not bring that plucked/harpsichord way up when it's playing? I'd like to hear more of it. And then a very cool fake outro!

Okay, I want a beer now.

and yeah I have it going thru a compressor because I don't know what else to do try and achieve balance! This is really frustrating.

Hahaha dobro! I loved that review! but what can I do about the mix!?

But everybody uses compressors on stuff like this, right?

Well, I made a couple suggestions but I'm not really qualified to comment on metal mixes - the only thing I'm qualified to comment on was the stuff you saw back there in the review.

That's alright, I still appreciate you taking a listen! I'm still clueless though! Maybe this will carry into tomorrow.

maybe I need to stop trying to be misha from periphery haha!

for those who get that...

I'm not a metal guy either but the one thing that really jumped out at me was the cymbals

There's something really wierd going on with them, it almost sounds like thay are playing backwards, there is no attack at all just this wierd kind of shhhhhhh sound that sort of swells and then disappears
my guess would be over compression with a really fast attack and slower release that is killing the transients and then releasing giving that wierd no attack just swelling and then dying sound

once I noticed it I became so aware of it that it actually distracted me from whatever else was going on

The guitar playing is very nice however

Other than that my ears and poor little brain are fatigued from mixing today so I can't add much else

Dill Hell - the bass drum seems to stick out a bit and the snare is kinda flat. Needs some vocals cause chicks dig the singer!
