A while back i said that i wanted to go to full sail and i got a lot of responses sayin not to go, if i shouldn't go there where should i go? I want to be a producer/ engineer

Go to a pro studio and learn, or take some engineering classes at a local community college.

i kno that Miami Dade College and University of Miami have really solid Music Business and Sound Engeneering classes. I took a couple at MDC. Its really worth looking in to.

im thinking about goin to MIA U to get my masters as a audio engineer after i get my BS in electrical engineering

Are there any colleges that hold music production as a single major? or is there no such thing

Nah, there aren't any music production courses or degree's that I've ever heard of. Most likely all your going to find is audio engineering and music theory. Production, especially in hip-hop is really something you can't teach because if it was everyone's beats would sound alike in one way or another. IMO it's one of those things we teach ourselves, but get tips, tricks and ideas from others.

i disagree menalattica - i believe the "magic" in a musical creation cant be taught - but as far as learnin shit about how to apply certain effects to certain instruments, n how to record, mix, engineer - the science of music can be taught -

but i agree that - if there is no specianess n your art of music, u will just sound like who ever u r "studying" or learning from - in a school environment or even at home n shit

You sound more and more like a teacher everyday

no offense hopefully ur not like some of these skanks up here

lol that's not a disagreement, atleast I don't think...
as far as applying effects etc... that's all covered under audio engineering. Whether it be tracking vocals, mixing sessions, micing sources, applying effects, tricks that are proven for certain sources etc... They all fall under the audio engineering aspect. In hip-hop the words "production" and "producer" are not misused IMO, but redefined. When I hear producer in hip-hop, it tells me this person makes beats, when I hear production, it tells me this is the beat. So when it was reffered to as production major or courses I think of a degree that says I was taught how to make rap beats...lol That's what I don't think can be taught past the basics.

I dunno...lol it's late, I'll re-read tomorrow :D

There's a lot of different schools around the U.S that offer great training in all roles of the industry. I currently am attending MediaTech Institute. better known as Dallas Sound Labs
