To all my HipHop/Rap producers out there, if you were going to build a home studio, what equipment is best for your pre-production area.

That question is broad as hell... Too much shit to choose from....

But the ROLAND MV8000 is looking sick as hell and supposed to run 8 tracks of audio (I think)... The YAMAHA MOTIF ES is just sick as hell... Price wize and functionality wise ES is my choice if for a all-in-one piece. If I was all about the samples then it'd be the MPC4000. Budget MPC1000... MC909 and ole RS7000.... Yup... Way too much shit to consider....

Skip the BS!!

For around the price of an MPC2000XL which is still around 1200 bucks i believe

you could get a brand spanking new copy of Cubase SX for 799 dollars, a used Akai S2000 with full 32 mb memory for 250 dollars and a used Keyboard controller for between 50 to 150 dollars.

thats exactly 1200 bucks...Yeah you would need a computer..but the sheer number of free virtual instruments..drum machines and samplers that are available on the web are phenomenal..

but to go one further it cost me less than 300 dollars to build a AMD Duron system with a 1.2 ghz cpu and a 80 gb h drive.

This is all you need to run a serious recording station.

Compare any multi track recorder out there to the setup im giving you.

BTW this is the system i use.

Cubase VST 5.0 audio/midi sequencing and recording (On my system i can run over 80 stereo tracks of audio with no glitches...Midi tracks are infinite!)

Akai s2000 for drums and sampling w/32 mb of simms..that gives you 12 minutes of sample time.

Yamaha psr78 or some crappy yamaha keyboard with midi out and in

M - Audio Revolution card it costs 100 dollars even at your local CompUSA. 107 db snr which translates into Crystal clear recording. The only drawback is that it has one stereo input but unless you record bands this isnt a problem...(Im going to be using a live drummer soon so im gonna have to get an Edirol 2496 10 input interface thats waay more cash but im doing different stuff than most producers are)

so in total we talking

1700 dollars total if you need to build the computer if you already got one its WAAAAY less money..

The only outboard gear i really mess with is the sampler and a sound module but after i got my vstis and dxis up and running i BARELY use my synth module im actually gonna sell it pretty soon. Cuz the virtual instruments sound SO much better

Believe it or not its a Jv1010 that im talking about and its got some incredible sounds on it but the vstis murder it evertime.

I havent really heard any keyboard out that messes with vstis for that matter. I mean i have around between 40 to 50 vstis with an average of 10 different banks for each of 200 sounds...yeah thats right im messing with almost 10,000 different sounds..

Go figure but computer based sequencing is the best step you could ever take i used to laugh at it...until my sequencer crapped out on me one day and i had to learn Cubase because i had to meet a deadline...im pretty much gonna be using Cubase until they outlaw it...ill put it like that and ill put up some songs i did with it pretty soon too...

Peace
Illumination
