i think it is...sorta

especially when rappers thinking being a producer and an audio engineer are the same thing.
I've known wannabe-rappers/beat makers..whatever you want to call them....go to a recording school and then getting a huge wake up call when realizing that audio engineering is NOT about making beats. That there are a crap load of other stuff that goes into it. Including studying electronics, tape machines, knowing recording consoles, mic'ing techniques, etc.

so in short, it may not be overused...but it is certainly misused a lot

I once had a big client who well gave me recording jobs and payed the bill. He beame a very close friend afterwards. One day he says...this is the fifth album with me as producer in the cover, but what does a producer actually do?......oh, if I fuck up completly, that's the everybody will blame haha :)
 
A whole lot people think that Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun, Con Air) is a good producer, but I bet he doesn't know how to use a compressor to get more punch out of the kick. Just like producer means something different in movie-land, its grown to mean something different in hip-hop land. Yeah, it can be confusing when you get into a cross-genre conversation, but each group seems to clearly understand their own meaning.

Producer isn't a title of acknowledgement for an individual's achievement of a specific skill (or what ever achievement).
If you walk - you're a walker, regardless of whether you walk in your hot big blue shoes or barefoot, regardless of whether you are walking on the red carpet outa'limo to make out of yourself in front of the camera even bigger a*s than you already are or just walking out of your old house on the back yard grass to pee, because your drain system is hopelessly clogged. :D
