I'm a Tascam 688 user, and I have the following equipment.

DBX 263X DE-ESSER
DBX 166 COMPRESSOR
RANE SP15 EQ
LEXICON LXP-5

When I'm recording, let's say a vocal track, whats the best way to route the signal via the insert jack? Should I go to the EQ first, compressor next, etc...? I know there will always be exceptions, but whats the "rule of thumb"?

Why not just do the vocal with some reverb in the headset? When you are done with all the tracks, you can then tweak the EQ and add reverb where needed.

Speaking of EQ, there is an excellent article by Ed Rei on this site. I suggest you punch it up and read it. It helped me understand HOW EQ REALLY WORKS AND WHAT IT IS INTENDED TO DO AND NOT TO DO.

But, the fun in recording is the creative genius of each one and their equipment and its capabilities.

Enjoy,

Have to run; Kato just fell in the pool.

There are different variations to this. here is one i like.

Compressor/Limiter - To get control (if needed).
EQ
Delay/Chorus
Reverb
Sometimes compression at the end of the chain but carefull on this.
