OK, heres the deal. I know basically nothing about recording or alesis, but I am in a ska punk band and we are getting into home recording. I recently ordered a roland vs-840GX digital 8track from musicians friend and some drum mics. The problem is, that they didnt send me the 840, they sent me an alesis M20. The price difference (in the catalog) of these two is like $3300 in my favor! So Im pissed and want my 840. My shipping reciepts say that I was sent both Items that I ordered, and no where do the mention the alesis. So I call the operators there and the guy tells me that in order to get the roland, they would have to bill my account again. He says his records say that I already have the roland. THen he says that the alesis is mine, and hes not gonna say anything. I got the guys name and hung up. My question is, what should I do with this thing. Im sure you know what it is, an ADAT digital recorder, but should I keep it, and use it, sell it, or send it back and get what I wanted. ON the one hand, its a nice piece of equipment, and we could greatly benefit, on the other hand its probably worth more to someone else if I sold it. Will musicians friend ever contact me and figure out what happened, or do they even care about stuff like this. I could use some help on this issue if anyone cares. Thanks.....

I have a friend that had a similar thing happen to him with Musician's Friend. He handled it the same way you did, calling and trying to clear it up. The people he spoke to (on 2 different calls) said just to keep it. He ended up with the unit he bought (it was an effects rack unit) and another one costing about $1000 more. It's been well over 2 years and he hasn't recieved so much as a phone call.

In my opinion, it wouldn't be ethically wrong to keep it, being that you've taken steps to get it corrected and they said to keep it. It would be different if you just "kept quiet" about it, hoping they wouldn't find out. Be sure to document your phone calls (it helps having the names of people you spoke with).

Now, check out this Alesis and make sure you're going to like it. If it's going to do everything you want it to do (which I'm sure it will), then run with it. If not, then you can pursue it further with Musician's Friend.

I would bug them until you get the Roland, thats what your orderd afterall.

Why couldn't this ever happen to me!!!

I order an M20 and they send me a set of guitar strings....

....Punkers have all the luck!....

Anyway, the M20 is a great machine, however, you will need a lot more gear to be able to make it work. The 840 provides you with a mixer and processing. If you keep the M20, you will still need to get the other things covered. So in the long run, you will be spending a lot more money. And at this point you can't make the recordings you could have been making right at this moment. Make them give you what you ordered, unless you've decided to spend the extra bucks to get additional gear.

Good Luck!!! And I admire your honesty for being concerned.

well I called them again and the lady there said they will email me a ups postage graphic to print out and i can send it back free of charge, and they will send me the roland. It sucks cause maybe if I would have kept my mouth shut we could have either some nice cordless horn mics, a new guitar, and lots of other new stuff, or be on our way to having a nice set up to record. anyways, Id rather keep lawyers off my but for the time being and be honest with them, so Im sending it back. thanks for the advice.

Here is a simple fact for you:

They screwed up, and send you the wrong item, which has gone through their administration, and off their stock-list.

You told them about their mistake, so you have given them the opportunity to correct their error.

For them to take it back and send you the correct item, means they have to do additional paperwork, incur additional shipping costs, and re-sell a unit they previously sold, which means they will sell it at a loss. To them, with an annual turnover of over 1 billion dollars, this is more hassle than its worth.

The unit in question is ideal for things like post production , its way to complex for you. Sell it, auction it, and buy what you really want.

In all honesty ehhbuddy...... You should have sold the item on ebay for a profit and then bought what you originally wanted and then some. You attempted to correct it and couldn't.....oh well.
