I got a sennheiser e 609 silver and that I've had a little over 3 years. In it's life it really hasn't gotten a whole lot of use, its always been kept in good shape and never been dropped. When I was using it to record earlier today I kept getting a distorted hissing sound when I was sound checking the guitar mic.

I've always liked the sound I got from it until now. So I changed the cable, nothing. tried a different mic, and the distorted hissing went away. I even checked out the head phones on a number of different sources just to make sure it wasn't the head phones. The only reason that I didn't use the other mic was because the other mic(although without the distorted hissing) has crappy sound quality.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tips without buying a new mic, which would be my next step. Maybe some mic recommendations aside from a SM57.

Well yeah ..... Sennheiser has a 10 year warranty!!!
Just contact them for a return reference number and away you go. ;)

Really I didn't know that because the limited warranty in that came with it in the box(yes I kept everything that came with it) said that it was only good for 24 months. Is this on all products or just the ones that don't say otherwise?

I don't know what is causing that hiss problem...though just to be sure, clean all the XLR contacts with some DeOxit (same on the cable ends and preamp input)...plug it back in and see. Try it with a different cable and preamp if you can.

I have two 609 mics that I rarely use. I tried them on guitar cabs when I got them but never like their sound and I always had to use them in combination with another mic. I had the same issue with SM57s. I'm sure either mic can be used to get a decent tone since many people do use them, but they just didn't give me what I was after and usually required too much work to find the position and/or to EQ later in the mix.

If you want to buy a new guitar cab mic --- Cascade Fat Head II ribbon mic.
This is the mic the permanently moved my 57 and 609 mics to the locker (when it comes to miking guitar cabs). I bought the stereo pair kit, and have not had a bad moment since with them (just check your polarity if using with other mics for same source). About the only thing I ever need to do in the mix is maybe roll off some of the very low end...but that's it. The guitar tracks just sit so nicely in the mix.

Could the mic have gotten moisture on the diaphragm? Maybe try letting the capsule sit under a lamp for a few hours?
