well i had turntables a few years ago and never had this problem but i got a vestax 2000 and a ortofon om pro s cartridge, i don't know if i have the weight set wrong (i dont think so) or the cartridge hooked up wrong or what but the needle stays on one track always, playing the same loop..... do i have to adjust the arm at all..... anyone have any suggestions?

someone told me that the vestax pdx 2000 have reported problems of loose platters, i can see this a little on mine but aren't they all a bit wobbley? i hope this isn't the case and it's ruining my needles and gonna force me to buy a 1200 or another vestax.......

I don't have a vestax table, but...

I do have 12s & TTX1s... I'd imagine they all kinda wok the same with regard to tracking and so on. I'd speculate that the problem isn't with your cartridge, but either the counterweight and/or the tomearm height. My buddy's 12s did the same shit & with a bit of tweaking I was able to get shit straight for him. His problem was the tonearm height.

If you haven't yet, check what Vestax says in the manual about those 2 things and you may wanna also check what Ortofon says (if anything) about the particular cartridge you're using.

I know it's just me, but I HATE ortofon cartridges... Besides, they've been known to wreak havoc on the connecting pins inside tonearms, at least on 12s...

Let me know step-by-step what you try and maybe I can offer some general assistance. I'll sniff around online for more info (and you should, too) if you get stuck.

Good luck.

thanks for helpin man....... i have it workin better now, at least it will play more then a minute before skipping..... it seems the best results i have is with the tonearm height all the way down and more stylus weight than i should have....... i'm not sure how to read the height of the tonearm, there is no way...... i don't have anything set like the manual shows and it's finally workin a little...... i get more skipping on tracks closer to the center, and the needle always skips inward......... but i can at least sample now, a few more tweakings and chat board readings and hopefully i'll be able to play a whole song

Oh yeah, does your vestax have a tracking control button (wheel-thingy you turn)? If so, fiddle with it, but if you're making major adjustments with the height and weight you may have to go the trial-and-error route.

Sounds like you're on the right path, my friend's table had the exact same problem, especially towards the end of the record, with the needle skipping inward, as I got closer to getting his shit calibrated properly.

One thing to be careful of is not over-calibrating and burning the shit out of your wax.

Sounds like you're about to get shit under control. Phat.

Oh yeah, you may wanna chack some sites on turntables (in general) and read up on tracking force and how different stylii track on (uh, in) wax. Do a general search with google or whatever and you'll find a plethora of info. Check out some of the audiophile turntable sites/links. If you can't quite find something cool, post again, and i'll throw you some links for interesting reads. Understanding some of the "math" helps the music make more sense...
