Ok so here's my story. I have this old desktop from way back in 1996. I've been looking on ebay for some upgrade parts and it seemed like it would be a fairly cheap and fun project to try to turn this thing into a little DAW (I don't record with a lot of tracks, I like my music simple). Anyway I recently bought some 72 pin memory for it. The most I could find per stick was 64MB a stick X4. So now I have 256MB of RAM for this computer that use to run on only 32MB total. HAHAHAHA. Ok now I have a problem, when I turn on my computer it reads all the memory and the begining, but doesn't do anything else after. It just stops.
Now here is were a lot more questions come in. I'm not to hot with internal computer stuff but I'm always experimenting. First thing I was wondering is how to I find out what my FSB and all those other numbers that I need to know for anyother upgrades, which I'll get to later. Would there be a max amount of memory that I can put in? Also I want to upgrade the CPU and harddrive. I would concider the motherboard as well but I don't know how to refit all its inputs to the housing.
So here is some more questions. My CPU is in a Socket 7. I was looking around and I found some AMD 500MHz CPUs that would fit. Question is would this work even though the original CPU is an Intel? Also would the increase of CPU make the memory work?? Not sure as to how fast the CPU in there is now but I'm guessing not too fast.
Ok last few questions. The HD i have in my computer now is only 1GB (HAHAHAHA). I was planning on getting something like 20GB. Would this help my memory problem?
If none of this helps I would give a new motherboards some concideration but I'm not really looking into that. I just wanted to have something to do basic demos onto. Anything would be better than recording onto my laptop's sound card plus I inherited an Audiophile 2496 from a relative and this is the only desktop I have available for it.
Any help would be great and is much appreciated. BTW the computer says its a "Achiever Computer" on the outside but when I boot up it says "American Megatends" I've never heard of either of these companies so I don't know if they make crap. Still it's a basic looking tower. Thanks!
