The not fountain head
I figure I'll touch on a touch on a few problems... Not all at once though, for your sake....

The first problem I'd like to address is a hum sound I hear when monitoring "Line In"... When the deck is set to 7 1/2, it's high pitched and when set to 3 3/4, it's lower pitched.... I think it has something to do with feedback from the motors... My connections not made through the harness, I connect via RCA.

It's strange.

Here are the circumstances when it occurs:

When monitoring through the headphone jack

When monitoring through the line out

With/withhout something plugged into line in

With/withhout something plugged into line out

Doesn't hum when monitoring button is on "Tape", only when monitoring "Source".

With the deck opened up, I tapped each of the modules/cards to see if there was a short in their connections. Nothing changes...

Seems that the monitoring switch does have some "play" in it. Ya know, static upon wiggling...

Volume knob and line knob do not change the volume of the hum

No microphones are connected

-------

My concern is that this hum will make it onto actual recording. I have just started messing with this thing. So, I'm not sure if that's the case, yet. My other problems have hindered my progress on the subject...

The main one is:
In playback, the left channel is weaker than the right. It seems that the hum does not follow this pattern, though.

I inspected/reseated the modules. I see one soldering joint that looks "caved in" if you will. There does appear to still be a physical connection, still. The module in question of one of the recording amplifiers..

Discliamer: I'm a SUPER NOOB to R2R's and electonic diagnostics, in general... Please understand that I do not yet have a service manual for this deck.. Hopefully, I am not mistaken in thinking I should post this...

Thanks to all people would leave helpful replies... I bought this and I'd really like to use it...

Attached is a short clip of me switching between tape speeds... I upped the volume, digitally, to ease your listening experience... Thanks again

The first thing I'd do is to clean all the switches and connectors. It could be something as simple as an earthing problem, and if you are getting static wiggling the switches its a sure sign that things there aren't 100%. I had other strange issues with a GX265D.

If your GX280D is anything like the 265 the switches are long slide switches on the amp boards. Dribble a little contact cleaner in the end of each switch (I used CRC CO, but others here have other suggestions) and operate it several times, all with the power off.

Let us know how you get on.
