GUITARDAZE
Sometimes I will record a vocal for a tune and the C1 just blows me away. Other times, I will record a vocal and it sounds kinda distant, with lots of sibilance problems.

Mostly latley, I have had problems. I have moved my studio into a differnt room, and I wonder if this may be effecting its sound. I wouldn't think it would effect it to much, since I sing pretty close to the mic. Anyone have any sugestions? I am running it through a vtb1, and then into a joemeek compressor. And then into my VS 1880.

Thanks,

Rich

Size of room will change things also what the wall are made of.
is there a lot of metel objects near such as cymbles mic stands etc
if any of what I said is a problem, a cheap way to deal with it is
hang a blanket on each side of the person you are recording only if you dont have a booth with proper dampining.
the blankets will shield most of the ambience caused by the room or whats in the room.

Blankets? Any sugestions on how to hang blankets? I put one over a mic stand once and put it infront of a singer, but I didn't notice that it helped much. I usually put the singer in a walk in closet that I have, but when I do my own vocals. I cant really do that. So I do it in the control room. I'm wondering if there is a certian area of the room that would sound better for mic placement?

Thanks......

To hang the blankets would be differant depending on your room.
cieling wood/ sheetrock/plaster etc.
you could build two holders out of wood 2x4s making a perfect square out of four of them with two small 2x4s as feet braces
2x4s are about $2 a piece, then drap the blanket over them.
thats just one way.
also the reason you didnt think it helped in your situation is because you need more of an inclosure to cut out room sounds
it sounds like you just had one draped over a mic stand which
wouldnt do a whole lot of good.

MarkoPolo, Thanks for the reply. What if I made a tent of sorts out of blankets and put the mike inside there and then sang my vocals inside this makeshift tent? I'm looking for the cheapest posible option. I want my vocals to have that warm smooth sound, but latley just seem to have distant harsh hi end sound.

A tent is fine. Check out the back cover of Johnny Cash's CD and you'll see what looks like carpet hanging all around the mic/chair. I used PVC pipe and built a little 2-person chamber with movers blankets wired to it... Makes a big difference.

The Studio Projects C series demo CD sounds great and it was just recorded in normal everyday New York apartment.... I suggest you pay closer attention to your mic technique, and or try another room.

He may not have another room to use.
I have a C1 also and it usually sounds good for most vocals I have used it for, but the room I use is set up with good acoustics.
The PVC idea is a good one but more expensive then wood but more light weight and would look nicer. try the tent option first if
you want and let us know how it workes for you.

There you go again DJL, praising Studio Projects for no good reason!

This spam has got to stop.......
