Hello,

I am having a problem with my power amp (there is no pre at all on this amp).

When I turn on the amp, I have the right side that doesn't seems to work at low volume. When I crank it a little, sound comes out.

This doesn't happen when the amp has been on for a few hours...

I was wondering if I should always leave the amp on or should I change certain parts in the amp?

This is a Carver M-500T poweramp (Hi-Fi audiophile poweramp) and it has been running for at least 20 years.

Thanks

Sounds like a dirty pot... get some tuner/pot cleaner and clean the right channel volume control...

Often the lower voltage of the reduced volume won't bridge the crap... boost the volume and the voltage bridges it...

Clean your left one... while you're at it

There is no pot on this amp, it is an ON or OFF type of amp, full power all the time...

Is there any internal component that could be cleaned?

Corrosion, oxidation, or dust can impact your signal like this at any point in the chain... (including internal component connections), though the usual suspect would be a pot since this has the most environmental exposure and doesn't have a soldered connection between the source & destination contacts.

Have you tried the amp with a different input... a power amp needs preamplification of some sort... it could be the output of your source audio...

Failing everything else... open it up... blow it out... wiggle around... and I bet the problem just dissapears...

Mine did the same. On the back of the unit there are RCA inputs. Take the cover off and look where the jacks are soldered on the PC board. There is a crack or cold solder joint there. Resolder all connections to the PC board. This should fix it.

Carver M 500-T

Did you find out what happen to your amplifier

you need to check the dates on threads when you search them... this one is@21/2 yrs old so they may not even be around anymore...

as a tech though i can tell you everything he mentioned points toward a connection bad solder joint type fix... if you're having similar problems...

I had this exact problem. Mine was a bad solder joint on the input connectors to the circuit board. When the unit heated up, the solder joint expanded and bridged the circuit. Resoldering fixed it and it has been working fine for the last 20 years or so.
