This is probably a lost cause. I bought a used AKG D3800 some time back to use on stage. Worked fine for a couple years. Then one day during a mic check it sounded different - very boxy and the freq range was like a telephone conversation. I switched to a 58. Next few times the AKG sounded fine but now it's a permanent condition. I've opened it up just to see what I could see and didn't see an obvious problem. Any ideas? Whaddya figure it would cost to repair?

Eddie,

First, check resistance of the coil. Also, open the grill and check if capsule looks OK. Watch for deteriorated foam and its loose particles. Check if fabric, which forms an acoustical resistance is not loose, and also, not clogged with dust.
