Problem using live console for studio purpose

I have a Yamaha 1604, 16 channel 4 groups live console, which I use along with a 8 track reel Fostex recorder.

Each channel on the console has a 1/4" input, XLR input and 1/4" insert jack.

I used to wire it roughly by connecting the first 1-8 channels as input to the recorder, by connecting the insert's out of each channel to the recorder 8 ins.

Than I connected the 8 outs of the recorder to the other 9-16 channels' ins of the mixer for monitoring.

Well, of course this is a very "rough" setup.

I want to be able to use the inserts for effects send/return,
and also to be able to use each channel for BOTH input and monitoring of the recorder, like it should be set up.

I'm probably gonna buy a 16 track analog recorder soon and I want to keep that Yamaha mixer because it has such a great sound, EQ and pre's.

But I guess being a live type console it may lack some of the main features on studio type consoles that makes it possible to implement that desired setup.

I'm also gonna add patch bays for the setup and wire that thing up as a studio should be wired !

But, still, I can't find how I can still use that mixer for the setup I want to make ... is it possible or will I have to use a studio mixer eventually ?....

What jacks does a studio mixer have that makes it possible to wire it up this way and how do I wire it ?

Thanks in advance !!

you need a mixer with direct outs on each channel to feed your recorder.
try using the aux sends too,if you have them. those can be helpfull for a lot of different things.

The main prob with a live mixer is that it doesn't have a monitor section for listening back from the recorder. May be get another Yamaha for monitoring. Then you can make the first console the feed (using your inserts as you have done) and monitor back trough the other mixer ??

cheers
John
