Hi,

Hoping someone can help me understand how best to set my studio up. The limitation i currently have is around my speakers, i'm running some Creative Labs 5.1 speakers (cant afford to shell out for monitors for the foreseeable future). Therefore, i'm thinking in order to keep using them I need to keep my Soundblaster live 5.1 installed, to use for the playback side of things, and then use my new M-Audio Delta 1010 for recording.

I currently have it setup as per below:

Instrument or Mic > Behrinnger Mixer > Main out on Mixer connected to Input 1 of Delta 1010 > Delta 1010 connected to pc using its bundled cable.

In windows XP I have the Soundblaster set as the playback device, and the 1010 set as the recording device, I am unable to get the 1010 to sound through the speakers (ie 1010 input, soundblaster output). I've tried to follow the manual but my drivers seem to have superceeded the manual and I appear to be missing tabs from the M-Audio control panel (Namely the Patch/Routing tab). The 1010 is also not passing audio to my audio apps for them to pickup the signal to record (Reaper and N-Trak).

I can hear the instrument through the channel 1 output on the M-Audio 1010 (when I have my headphones connected here).

Can anyone see what i've done wrong here?

Thanks in advance.

Why don't you just run the speakers from your mixer and avoid using the soundblaster?

As far as I am aware the splitting of the bass signal to the subwoofer etc happens in the soundblaster/drivers so still need to use it

?

put the soundblaster and the 5.1's on eBay and use the $5 you make towards some studio monitors to plug into your behri :D

First, make sure your SB works without the delta. Then, once you know the SB is fine, make sure your recording/sequencing software can play through it and that everything is fine there as well.

When that is confirmed, add the delta. I'm not sure what behringer mixer you have but what I did was patched my direct outs from my mixer (a very old mackie) into the delta 1010 channels 1-8 (not the main outs into the delta).

input path:
mic/inst => mixer(1) => delta(1)
mic/inst => mixer(2) => delta(2)
mic/inst => mixer(3) => delta(3)
etc ...

Input into the recording software/sequencer should come from any of the delta channels 1-8 (or in stereo 1/2, 3/4 etc). Output should be piped to the SB.

Delta control panel applet should be OK to start with default settings.

Windows control panel settings shouldn't make a difference as your recording software should let you pick individual inputs and outputs.

Hope that helps...

Um, that wont work. You cannot mix drivers in a windows DAW. One ghetto way to do it would be to run the 1/2 out of the delta to a stereo 1/8" jack and then into the line in on the soundblaster and hopefully it has realtime monitoring

Interesting...

I guess I never had to deal with that issue because I have the delta 1010 and the audiophile 24/96 (same drivers).

So using a windows daw, unless the sound cards are from the same manufacturer, I can't use two sound cards simultaneously? That would suck...

Yes and no. Some manufactures allow for it (i.e. M-audio deltas) some dont. There are also third party apps for using multiple firewire interfaces from different manufactures (i.e. Centrance).
