Problem in computer multitrack recording

I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0. After recording something on the first track the audio on the first track is also recorded into the other tracks.

Like if i have guitar strumming as the first track and then record vocals on track two, the guitar sound that i heard on my headphones is recorded also on track two.

My setup is (roughly) condenser mic > preamp > usb-soundcard >
pc-laptop.

Anyone know where the problem might be?

Hey Mr. Jones, welcome to da board. Check the software for your soundcard. It probably has a mixer section where you choose what to record. It's most likely set to record what you hear. All you need to do is change it to record the line in.
