I am considering up grading to Pro Tools. But I heard that they onloy sell it with the sound card and everything...but I don't need all of that.
Where can I get Pro Tools the software? Where can I find out more info ont eh net about Pro Tools?

pro-tools is not...

Yeah man pro-tools is not for the faint at heart... you can't run the full version with pro-tools without the hardware......just for the core system alone is $12,000.... most likely at your age or if you are old sorry you won't be able to get it without winning the lottery.. and if ya do I will be glad to show you to my pro-tools dealer. But you can get the pro-tools free.... which gets you a like 20 tracks I think... which you can get at digidesign.com like the guy before me said. If you are downloading the pro-tools free make sure you get the instruction download... it is another seperate download. Also to run pro-tools free you need windows 98 or higher and 128 mb. of ram. If happen to win the lotto just give me an e-mail...

Mix 24 gets you 64 tracks.
That's 156.25 a track.
Adat lx is 125 a track.
Adat xt is 175 a track
Buy tracks in bulk.

Zoetrope, my understanding is there are 3 kinds of protools:

1 the freebie - 8 tracks

2 the digi 001 version - this is the software cum soundcard cum ugly breakout box cum cable bundle which has, I think, 8 analog ins that you can track simultaneously, and lots more tracks for the mix, like tubedude said. Probably $800-900.

3 the full-blown, very expensive, it's-not-really-worth-it-unless-you're-a-pro version.

The Digi 001 is a nice system and has 18 inputs, so you can actually record 18 tracks simutaneously. But you have to be carefull, because you will need a lot of extra equipment to use all the input. And it is not necessarily cheap, especially for really nice sound.

Inputs 1-2 have a pre-amp wired directly to the digital converts. So you can plug a mic (XLR or 1/4 balanced) directly into the breakout box. These two channels also have phantom power.

Inputs 3-8 are 1/4" balanced and have no preamp, so you need a mixer with preamps if you want to use them with a mic to record. The converters are good, but not top-of-the-line equipment. You can plug your synths directly into these inputs with no problems.

Inputs 9-16 are an just an Adat optical input and output "ports" on the soundcard, not the breakout box. So you need to buy an interface if you want to use them for mic inputs to record. The Digimax or RME will give you 8 nice preamps and converters for this ADAT "port", but will run you about $1200. Alesis also makes an Adat interface for around $350, then you can use the preamps in you mixer and connect directly.

Inputs 17-18 are S/PDIF and on the back of the breakout box, so you will need both a pre-amp/converter setup to use this for recording.

It is a nice system and pretty flexible. There is a lot of room to grow. You should be able to get the Digi 001 for about $750, and that includes ProTools LE, which maxes out at 24 tracks. If you need more tracks, you can buy Logic and run it with the Digi.

i JUST GOT A G4/733/40GB/CDR & DIGI 001!

i was using;
FOSTEX VR800 HD RECORDER W/ FOSTEX VM200 DIGITAL MIXER.
also:
DIGITECH S100 (FX PROCESSOR)
ART TUBE MIC PRE AMP
AUDIO TECHNICA DYNAMIC MIC
MASHALL CONDENSER MIC
ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR
SAX
TRITON 61
MPC 2000 (ORIGINAL)
FOSTEX MONITORS (SATELLITES)

how can i continue to use my MIXER and other EQUIPMENT with DIGI 001?
the HD RECORDER is an ADAT OPTICAL CONNECTION.
also i dont know how to INSTALL PLUGINS (don't laugh i'm still new) can anyone lend me some tips and advice?

guys in my neighborhood didn't take me serious when i first started building a "LAB" (slang) over a year ago, i guess they felt it wasn't the norm for a chick?.....

so PLEASE be gentle men as well as fellow musicians and HELP IF you can.
THANX i appreciate it

Don't forget there is also the XP toolbox. This is the ProTools LE software with the AM3 interface. It runs at max 4 inputs simultanious (2 digital and 2 analog) but for many this will be more than enough. You do get the advantage of the LE system without the costs of the Digi001 interface.

I hear ya....

But, I already have the DIGI 001 and G4.
So how should i connect my fostex VM200 digital mixer?

or the rest of my equipment?

You should be able to use the A/D converters on the HD Recorder as inputs 9-16 on the Digi as long as they are ADAT. I know that the Alesis ADAT will work for this.

I hooked up an Alesis 24 mixer to the Digi001 by taking the channel outs and sending them to the inputs, 3 - 8 on the Digi001. This way, I can use the preamps on the mixer. I also send the Monitors back through the mixer so that I can use my monitors.

As far as installing plugins, read the instructions that come with each plug-in. They are pretty much self-installing. If you need some more information, let me know. I have been using the Digi001 in my "downstairs" studio for a while now. It is a nice way to do quick and dirty songwriting or develop some samples.

I am not using a Mac, so there are some things I won't be able to help you with.
