Since I use Pro Tools 9 on my home computer with a TASCAM US 1800, I can't really mix or edit my sessions anywhere other than at home, so I was wondering if my pro tools session files would work on reaper on my laptop, and if reaper works without an audio interface

Reaper should work without an interface. The problem you'll have with using Pro Tools files with Reaper is that Reaper can't open Pro Tools sessions. You'll have to ReWire or otherwise pull the audio files out of Pro Tools and import them into Reaper.

Reaper needs some kind of audio device to work, but your onboard sound card will work.

Does any DAW software open sessions from its competitors?

What they said ^^

If you're looking to convert sessions, try AATranslator

I've never used it, but the main developer is on the REAPER forums all the time and from what I hear from others, it works great.

They recently added importing from PT9!

If you don't want to convert your session, you should consolidate your tracks so that when you import them into another DAW, the audio will still line up correctly.

Why can't you just install pro tools 9 on your laptop? as long as you bring the ilok you can use 9 where ever.

Thanks for the replies guys
will certainly give reaper a look in

as for putting 9 on my laptop,
my laptop cant actually run it so yeah...

If your not using a lot of tracks then why not import them to reaper one at a time? The only downside to this would be trying to match them up once inside reaper.

I'm a hack, but I've always just exported the tracks at the full song's length (i.e. if the guitar solo doesn't kick in until 2:30, it'll have 2:30 of silence). This way everything lines up at the beginning. Then you can use Reaper to strip out the silence. It's a hassle, but I don't have to do it too often. Actually, I usually have to export from Reaper to be used in ProTools in other people's studios.
