Is pro tools worth the money or should I go with something else?

I amtrying to compare everthing out htere and figure out what I want?

I'm trying to keep it close to a hundred bucks though.

Thanks

The Beatles are the best band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use ProTools Free, and it's most definitely worth the money! Seriously, if you want to see whether PT is for you, try the free version. It's basically ProTools LE (what you'd get with an Mbox, 001 or 002), but limited to 8 tracks of audio and 48 MIDI tracks. After working with PTFree for a couple of weeks, just to be sure I liked it, I shelled out $50 for the D-Verb RTAS plugin. I'm very happy with it.

Of course you know you're not going to get much ProTools for a hundred bucks, right? An Mbox goes for around $450, AFAIK. I don't think they sell the software unbundled.

the other night i listened to SGT peppers all the way through the first time since the 60's. wow, what a masterpiece. your right---the best band ever.

For $100 I"d try ProTools Free... costs nothing,

Also, keep an eye out for Cakewalks Home Studio, I don't know how it converts to American dollars.. I'm assuming you live in the USA. It might cost a little over $100... but I've heard good results from it.

If you consider money protools is not for you :) Get Cakewalk Home Studio 2002, You will get the feedom to do unlimited tracks of audio and it is almost equivalent to Sonar. You'll love it.

I just got the Beatles Anthology DVD... WOW!!! Sounded AWESOME!!! Best band ever bar none.

Were can I get ProTools free from?

I am trying to get kthe whole Beatles collecton on cd. I also have the original Help!, and Yellow Submarine albums.
There the best!!!

PT Free only works on Mac & Win98

It blows that Pro Tools Free doesn't work on XP... No way to check it out!!

If youre not willing to spend money, I highly advise you do not get into recording. In the past 5 years I have spent approximately $100,000 on recording gear, studio time, or recording related costs. And alot of people way top that number.

Magix Music Studio uses Samplitude technology AFAIA, and it really doesn't get better than that for under $100. You can can also try Tracktion which is supposed to be pretty good for under $100.

i've spent $1,500 over a few years....who has 100,000? ha....

Cookies and milk for you Mr. $100,000 man!! But really, who are you talking to? I think everyone here already HAS spent gobs of money on our mutual habit; but since every other recording tool for windows has a demo that'll work in XP, it seems silly that an industry standard name such as Pro Tools has a demo that only works on an OS that is over 4 years old. Many of us who built DAW's since then can't even preview their software.

Demo's are vital as they let you see which tool will fit your needs. There's no other way except to check them out.

Demos are fine. I started recording years ago on a borrowed recorder. I wasn't saying "stay out!" I was giving a simple warning to anyone who gets on the road. Recording is like a crack habit, and I'm HIGHLY addicted to it.

As for Pro Tools, it's an entire system, not just a software program. It's like saying you want to demo izRADAR. I mean, you could look at their software on a screen all day, but without the hardware that runs it, RADAR is useless. Or maybe you want to see the software that runs on an SSL. The software is nothing without the hardware it comes with. Their only mistake was to ever make that PT free junk. It should not have ever been put out.

H2H,

Interesting stuff. I'm new to the DAW world, I didn't know there was hardware associated with pro tools?? It seems I have much to learn. I'm checking out demos of Sonar and Samplitude right now. Been using N-tracks and Cubasis VST V4.0 that came with my sound card.

Being as everyone has radically different opinions on each sequencer, I realized that I had to try each one first. Very time consuming!!

I disagree.

Pro Tools FREE is Pro Tools LE, tweaked to work with generic hardware, and limited to 8 audio tracks (mono only) and 48 MIDI tracks. The limitations are partly to keep it from competing with the LE line, and partly because of the extra work the software has to do without the Digi hardware. I believe the intent of ptFREE is to let potential customers get a feel for the Pro Tools workflow without giving away the whole store. As for me, I've tried other low-end software, including N-Track (whose demo version is severely limited IMO), and I believe that the quality of the finished product I can create with ptFREE is superior to what I can create with the others.

I am not a big fan of Digidesign's marketing tactics, and I'm not sure that I would buy a Pro Tools LE based system (M-box, etc.) if and when the time comes to upgrade. But I think I have a pretty good idea what it would be like to work with a real Pro Tools system, thanks to Pro Tools FREE. (Or at least what it was like 5 years ago! :D)
