Hi all,

I just added a Motif Rack along with a Triton Studio to my setup. I want to be able to use Pro-tools as my sequencer. How can i do this? Right now i have the motif rack running in/out to the Triton and I have my digi 002 receiving from the thru of my motif rack. That seems to allow me to receive signals, but i can't playback what i have recorded. I also have my triton setup to only use 9-16 midi channels and the motif only 1-8. I hate that studio recall is only supported in cubase... because that would really be kewl to use the motif as a plugin. Any ideas on this one?

I also wish that reason would allow you to use external devices... with the sequencer because i have fallin in love with the easy of use of it's sequencer. Oh well.... can't have it all i suppose.

Do i need a midi interface? If i'm thinking correctly i could run the digi002 direct in/out and direct in/outs for the triton and motif.. thus giving me back the 16 channels per device i was losing my way. Does this sound right? I asked in the midi forum.. but no one knows???

After reading your series of questions I begin to loose what your trying to fix really half way through it...

You already did....

After reading the last section of your post, I get confused into thinking currently are you using the Triton as MIDI? or regular. I'm not a MIDI genius, but your problem stems from not being played back, and I don't think you have setup the rest from the recorded triggered note to playback right.

I also have my triton setup to only use 9-16 midi channels and the motif only 1-8. I hate that studio recall is only supported in cubase... because that would really be kewl to use the motif as a plugin. Any ideas on this one?

What are you talking about? Reasons allows you to use external devices. The Triton will trigger a sound via MIDI data.

going direct io's, will only turn your MIDI controller (Triton being used in Pro Tools) into a regular snyth again, your going to be recording regular sounds from your Triton.

Are you trying to trigger sounds that you have on your DAW with the Triton? Or are you trying to simply play the triton and record it. Or are you trying to transfer already recorded MIDI combo from the Triton to DAW? how do you have it hooked up without going into scattered thoughts in your next post.

Sorry for the ramblings: yes i have the triton as my midi sequencer right now... but i hate it.... and would like to use pro tools to record the midi notes and play them back to the appropriate device.

I did go off on a rambling.. i was thinking my life would be so much easier if Propellerheads Reason allowed you to control external devices from the sequencer. Meaning that i can play/record the triton and motif sounds along with my reason tracks.

If it does i have not figured out how to do it.... can this be done? If that's the case then I will just make Reason my sequencer and just record regular tracks in protools after i have completed my arrangement.

Actually it can be done, I'll have to research on how it's done. At the studio we have a Yamaha drum machine hooked up to Reason and also Nuendo. BUT, the problem is that Reason won't capture the sound from the Triton, just to let you know. Your able to play and record on the Triton as usual, and send midi info to Reason, and record reason sounds. To get the sound of the Triton, you'll need to get SampleTank, or any of those Korg sound kits for Reason. That'll most likely be some type of SoundFont. There's also a program for the Neko/Meko that takes out sounds from other keyboards. Go to http://www.openlabs.com

Midi Problem Resolved (Protools Midi Setup)

Hi all,

This was a pain in the butt to setup. Here's how to do it:

Korg Triton in/out direct digi002
Motif Rack in/out direct to usb on pc installed yamaha usb driver and turn on the midi usb on the motif rack.
M-audio oxygen installed usb driver

Setup the midi studio with all 3 devices. Under the midi input make only the triton and oxygen input devices.

Under the track menu turn on input only monitoring... this was my real problem all along.... once that was switched on everything started working properly.

Also the midi patch names don't match for the motif rack es in the midinams folder. So i went to digicake.com and downloaded the correct midinams list. You have to setup the motif rack without a model number in the studio setup to use the new track names list. Go to the patch select then select change then point to your new midinams and then you will have the correct patch list names.

After playing with my new setup.. i have far more possibilities with using protools as my sequencer than only using reason. By the way reason 3.0 does not allow midi outputs.. which means you can not drive external midi devices from it. You can only use midi devices to act as a controller for the internal software devices. I checked the tech forums and alot of people are complaining about it. Any who.. i'm happy again.

I'm thinking they probably addressed that problem in Reason 4 that's coming out very soon.

I hope so i hate having to have 2 methods of creating a song. I will do all my drum tracking in reason then i will have to rewire to pro-tools in an instrument track, then laydown all my other parts in pro-tools. I would like to be able to use only reason for all my tracking... then just use protools for mixing/mastering.

Oh well anything is better than using the triton's sequencer... yuck!!!!

do you record your midi sounds to audio tracks for mixdown????

OMIGOD that was scary. this post is in 2 forums

Demi you is messin' with my mind :D :D :D

Well now that i have all my devices setup as a true midi studio, then i really don't have to do that. I can just throw in my eq,comp, on the inserts selection then master out to my tascam cdrw-4000. If reason does change on the next version then i will go that direction, but by then i will be so use to using reason and protools together with re-wire i probably will not want to change again.

On second thought I'm thinking i may have to bump them down to audio tracks to save resources. Also i'm use to seeing the wave data when i do track edits.... working with midi data is a little weird in protools. I guess i need to get more comfortable with using it.
