Ok....I got Protools on yesterday and it's taking awhile to get going. First of all it took me two hours to figure out that I needed to download version 6.9 for it to work with my operating system.

Now....I can't change the input source to record any tracks...Can someone help me with this???

Thanks,
J.John

why do you have a negative reputation?

more importantly what computer / OS / soundcard are you using?

If input sources are unavailable you'll first have to go to your setups pull down menu then to the i/o setups and make sure the i/o is configured properly.

The i/o chicklet page is your digital patch bay and is very powerful. you'll do well to "master" this page. You can configure, name and store various routing schemes appropriate to any task at hand

Huh??????????????????????

1. See my discussion in the post by sWurve

2. I have a G5/OSx operating system/standard soundcard used.

3. So how do I configure this Chicklet page. I'm trying to record from my keyboard into the line in jacks on my MBox. What settings do I need to have in order?

I was under the assumption that to use pro tools software, you needed their proprietary hardware. I know there was a free version of pro tools that worked with any hardware, is that the version you re using? i'm not too familiar with pro tools, but your problem might be that PT does not support the generic soundcard that comes with the G5's

no, he said he has an Mbox

the I/O setup SHOULD already be defaulted to the correct I/Os for you. I think all PT systems come configured to run out of the box. If it's not try this:

Open the I/O setup and click on Input. Ctrl+A to select all and select Delete Path on the bottom. Clicking on New Path creates a Mono "patch" and clicking stereo right next to that Green dot makes it a stereo "patch". Then just click in the white boxes next to that to make it say L under "Analog 1" and R under "Analog 2". This will be your main ins.
Do the same thing for the outputs.

hopefully that made some sense. Then just create a track, set the correct input that your mic is on, and the correct output as to where your speakers are connected and record arm the track....then press record.

Lol.....

But that sounds like it should work I will def. try this when I get home...dangit I just need to get going. I've used protools a numerous amounts of times on other people's systems, now i'm stuck like chuck when I get mine..

thanks dude!

Jamaal, in addition to the stuff I said on the other forum, are you trying to select "line in" instead of "mic in" from the software? If so, you can't, you have to do it from the mbox (hit the "source" button until the LED cycles to "line"). The software only selects between channel 1 and 2 (and SPDIF L or R if selected in the Hardware Setups.) Hope this helps.

Yeah, I know about that too, I think it may be the stuff that benny said, I remember encountering this prob. about a year ago, and that sounds like something we did to fix the problem,

I will try as soon as I get home, dang work....lol....

Well.....have you been to the page I suggested?? I know your new to Pro Tools but this is fairly self explanatory. If you haven't been there or still don't understand I'd assume that it's covered in the Pro Tools "Getting Started" guide.

Well where is the Chicklet page, I asked Digidesign support where this was and they didn't even know.....

Oh by the way, I'm still at work so I haven't tested any of this yet.

Thanks

Wait .......you described your problem to a Digidesign tech guy, used the term i/o and "chicklet" page in the description, and he claimed he couldn't help you??

Sorry but I'll be blunt here. The EXTREME arrogance of Digi Tech Support sometimes becomes deafening.

The term chicklets has been used for a long time by MANY Pro Tools users. In fact I picked up the term from a mid-west Digi Rep. This guy or gal may not have heard the term before but CERTAINLY could have put two and two together if they had been inclined.

Anyway...did you find your i/o page??

well, "chicklet" isn't really the correct term for it.
Digi has gone through a lot of changes in the past few years including creating a certification course where they teach everyone (probably even Digi employees) the correct names for each item in the software. Edit Insertion/Follows Playback, Regions Menu, Command Focus, Online command, Auto Input versus Input Only, Takes List, Quick Key for enabling a parameter for automation, what each symbol next to the groups list means, etc.

i'm not saying Digi tech support people know everything ('cause they are kind of daft sometimes)...but asking someone about a "chicklet"??...personally I was confused as hell as to what you were talking about when you said that until I noticed you mentionted the I/O setup.

anyway, Jamall, I believe the "chicklet" page he is referring to is the I/O page itself. The chicklets are the little square blocks that you fill in to define which outputs refer to which path. It's just a simple grid.

Yep yep all true.

I'm more often than not a pretty articulate guy but over the years more than one Digi tech rep has reduced me to stuttering. Strange attitude from someone who's primary job desciption is....... helping.

Just the mention of Digi tech support un-nerves me. It so great we don't have much need for them..at least not like in the early days. They remind me of the David Spade commercials.

I shall from this day forward refrain from calling it the "i/o chicklet!
