thinking of geting new hd version but i want to record from a recording console. i read i need cards but dont know wich to get or how the mixer connects.i have pro tools 8 with a mbo 2 but i want to get away from just using the mbox and i need more inputs for recording.what does the console hook to? any help is greatly appreciated with this.thanks for all who read or respond.

You don't need a console. You just need an 'interface'. PT used to require Avid's own hardware to run, but now you can use pretty much any brand of interface! It's what you plug in your mics and instruments into, like a console. But the interface will convert the analog audio signals into digital 1s and 0s so your computer software can interpret the audio.

Check out some of the stickies in the newbie forum.

thanks. i understand the interface. looked at a few allen and heath boards with usb. was mostly wondering how some of the older stuff worked with boards. guess they ran everything to rack interfaces. some have some weird connections. maybe the allen and heath boards will be compatible. i know they are with cubse wich i have also.guess can record to cubse and export everything to pro tools for mixing editing and master work.thanks for the help.

A mixing console with USB still isn't an interface, really. I mean, I don't think you need a mixer. You just need an interface which will allow you to get your sound into the computer, and then you mix "inside the box" from there (IE. in the computer/software).

Unless you have a specific reason for getting a hardware mixing console, you may just want to look at interfaces (firewire or USB 2.0) like the M-Audio Profire 2626 or something.

Older stuff? What do you mean? Like outboard processors (compressors, EQ, effects, etc)?

Do you mean HD native (min $3500) or a full blown multi thousand dollar HD setup? Or did you just mean the software?

Either system is mucho money because your talking about breaking everything down into cost (AD/DA converters, mic preamps etc...).
