I think I'm getting the itch, I currently have a set up, in short:
DM24, P.C.III/w-Cubase, D.P., MOTU 2408 MKII, MDR24/96, HHB classic 70, T.C. Electronics Finalizer etc, etc. I got the stuff

Though I'm kickin major ass with this stuff, a friend of mine let me listen to his recent songs in P.T., I dont know if I envyed cause it wasnt my production or cause he said it was done in P.T., or was it just my imagination. I mean the guy purchased 3 tracks from me and they sounded just as fine mixed, so why am I bugging ?

But I was wondering should I get a MAC G4 or another powerful P.C. for that matter & Digi 001 and just integrate it with my rig, just have a PC-CUBASE/D.P. and a PC or MAC-Pro-tools.

Am I just letting the gear slut it me, get the best of me

pro tools wont make you a better producer, and it wont create a better record.

it's not all it's hyped up to be either.

the hardware is superb and all that, but actual functionality and whatever, a lot of today's high end stuff (i.e. Nuendo, Logic) do a lot of the things P.T does.

the only thing you may want to look at are your convertors. maybe that's where his stuff sounds better? if he's using the proper PT hardware, then, hmm, ..i dunno.

can you post some of it up here? id like to have a listen and tell you what i think!

But make sure you post it in the MP3 mixing clinic or certain people on this site will go apeshit.

You are right, but sorry I dont have anything in MP3 format, maybe I'll do that this weekend and get back to you.

Honestly, I guess it was just the competitiveness in me
not to say his tracks were BETTER persay, but kind of saying to myself " DAMN, THIS IS REEEALLY GOOD", " CAN I COMPETE WITH THIS" and the answer is yes, I can, and have been

I think the gear whore came out when someone whipped out a new thing in my domain.

my friend did say, the kick/boom came out a lot louder in my monitors, he asked me to turn the treble/bass down, I'm like I have it going 2 track in -- that's the way the mix is, he was shocked that it sounded boomy-- it seemed like all of his drum were mixed waaay up from rather than his vocal, but HEY! it's not my call --- it still sounded good for his soon to be release CD.

Also I have very great converters

well, it should have sounded fine on your monitors without you needing to alter the EQ of the monitors.

hmm...!

yep, you're right, 2 track in, and thats it. maybe he needs to look at the mix again.

pro tools is quite over-rated. i have it, and i dont think i could make a better record with it, than using the mackie standalone racks or any of the other recorders here.

PT is a big buzz word which so many people mistake for an excellent recording.

dont believe the hype!
(im not aiming this at you, im just saying, in general).

I agree the protools thingie is much of a hype. Though I'm using it currently (AM3), and I'm thinking about expanding the system. I came up with a lot of great hardware/software like Motu/RME/Steinberg etc....but feel really bad about leaving the trusty Protools environment. It does appeal to clients, and it does make an impression. Also I like the soft and hardware. I know it's pure mentally, and I know mentally isn't my strongest point, but I guess I stick to protools. Digi001 here I come..(aaaaaggggghhhhhh)

to be honest, if you're gonna get pro tools, the only worthwhile option is to get Pro Tools 24.

id rather run logic or cubase than the lighter pro tools. just my opinion though, a lot of people here have found the digi 001 great. i just didin't find it so good compared to my 24 system. but that was mainly hardware critisism.

Longwave, you couldn't be right more....but I suppose you're using it to really record multitrack. I use the Tascam DTRS for multitrack, and only use protools for editing 2 tracks and live mixes editing. I also use Bias peak with waves NPP and C4. So it's basicly mastering I do with the soft. At this point serious protools is out of order financially (I just invested major in a new console and recorder), but in the end I guess something like a secondhand protools setup (TDM) or Soundscape will be acquired.

I'm not running midi in my studio (mostly recording real bands and musicians) and had very good experience with protools. I guess in the end it's all personal taste.

i use PT for different things. mainly multitrack. but i only find myself using it for like editing drums up or vocal comping. i use standalone recorders. anything which needs heavy editing, or whatever goes through PT. sometimes ill transfer everything into PT and then send the channels out to the d8b's. each project requires something different.

ive been using Nuendo for mastering lately. it's great. i heard that one of the beach boys albums is being re-mastered on it as we speak or something.

what console did you buy?

cool!

hey, just went to your website. i noticed you had a Tascam DA30. could you tell me what the position button does? and is there any way to see how many hours have gone on the head? or can you check if there are any errors on the tape?

Cheers

Position button?
and is there any way to see how many hours have gone on the head? or can you check if there are any errors on the tape?
As far as I know that;s only possible with the multitrack machines.

do you have the DA30 or the DA30mkII?

i bought a DA30 from my mates studio just to take out live. there is a position button and it doesn't do anything!

ideas?

I have the DA30, not the MKII, but I'm not aware of a position button. Where is it located? This is coming from memory since my studio is located 25 kilometres from my private home.

PRO-TOOLS 24

LongWaveStudio

Yeah man, PRO-TOOLS 24 Mix would be kick ass, but I think I would use it just for 2-Track Mix down, so in that instance 001 should be accomodating.

It's taste really, I just get tired of walking in a room with my MIXES and when they hear it, they smile and say "YOU MIXED THIS IN PRO-TOOLS", I'm like nawww, then all of a sudden they say " THE HIGHS ARE THIS, THE LOWS ARE THIS ".

So if I had said yes to doing it in PRO-TOOLS would it have sounded GREAT, no flaws ?

But then that leads me to see how shallow some people are, it's kind of like saying: "I HAVE A LINCOLN NAVIGATOR", oh yeah the 2002 series ?, "NO, THE 98 EDITION, aww man that's not the flavor, that's old ---- But yet they arent driving ANYTHING, your only going off what the JONESES are buying or doing.

Granted, in the long run if I come across the 001 I will pick it up but I'm not gonna hold my breath

Longwave,

I found the position button. It's the button below margin reset etc. I never used it before. The manual says its a button to set the tape a couple of frames before an index point. bla bla bla. I don't see any use for it for me.

Not, that would be a bad idea. Pro Tools 24 (d24 and DSP Farm) support is almost completely gone. You need to get a MIX system to be anywhere near current, or an HD system (with a 192 I/O) if you really want to hear why Pro Tools is better than everything else right now.

As far as someone else's mix from Pro Tools sounding better than yours from non-Pro Tools, is it possible that he's just a better mixer than you? I've met people who could mix me under the table with an ADAT and a Behringer mixer.

sorry man, i did actaully mean the mix version. i was thinking about my PT24 units and said the wrong thing:-)

i had a pro tools video through my door today which was interesting. haven't finished watching it all yet. i think theyre trying to get me to buy more digidesign stuff!

pro tools is great, IF you have the right hardware.
if you're buying digi 001, you're not really at a great advantage. i wasn't that impressed by it at all.

it's very true though, pro tools is a big buzz word. when i get hired to go to another studio, i get the same smiley face reaction when i wheel in my pro tools systems. people think it'll make you a better record..when it wont really.
