For a while, I had planned on spending around a grand on pro tools 002. I record all sorts of instruments, and have my own home based studio. After walking around NAMM today, I noticed that there are many alternatives. I am very happy with Adobe's Audition, and wanted to know of a good soundcard that would give me at least 4 or 5 inputs expluding MIDI, RCA, ect. By this I mean simple line/mic inputs. What are my options?

I'm along the same thinking as you are. I've been looking at the 002R for months now, but just can't pull the trigger.

I'm either going to go with 2 Firepods, or wait until the Onyx 1200F gets released, and continue using Sonar (I just purchased Sonar 5).

The RME Fireface seems to get great reviews too, if you want to spend a little more $$ for some better quality.

Disclaimer:I don't know first hand........just from what I've read here & other boards)

If you're wanting to stay Firewire:

Presonus Firepod ($599) - I own one and it's very nice
Tascam FW 1804 ($499) - I had one, great features but had issues with drivers at times
M-Audio Firewire 1814 (~$499) - I've heard bad things about drivers
Mackie Onyx 400F ($699) - New and supposed to be very nice
RME Fireface 800 ($1450) - I had one for a while, AMAZING!!!! Expensive though.
Edirol FA-101 ($499) - Never heard anything about this one.

All of those have 8 analog ins with various sets of pres and line ins. That should get you going good.

The MOTU 828 MKII is excelent.

You get 8 channels of A/D/A on 1/4 inch ins. and 2 mic inputs on the front. Right out of the box you get 10 channels input! The pres don't steal from the other ins. I use an old ADAT for 8 more channels via the ADAT optical in. 18 in's at the moment. You can go up to 20 if you are using ADAT optical and the RCA SPDIF inputs. It's a very flexable unit. Sounds great. A steal around $750 dollars.

I am a digi002R user and I am generally satisfied with it and protools. Let me put on my Protools basher hat, since I'm a little pissed at digi today, when they announced that I could now use more than 32 tracks/voices, but that I have to pay $500 for it. Well, the $500 bundle comes with a bunch of free plugs and other stuff too, but I really didn't ask for any of it nor do I want or need it, so from my perspective it's $500 for them to uncripple my software (let's face it, 32 voice limit is a cripple purposely engineered into the software to LIMIT it's functionality). If they threw in automatic delay compensation, I might think about it, but I'm sure they're saving it in their back pocket to gouge their customers outta more money later. The kicker is, only a couple months ago, they rolled out this "great deal" where you could get v7.0 and a choice of two plugs outta five for $100, but guess what? two of the plugs are in this $500 dollar package, and so is v7.1. So I basically threw away my $100 last month and they are asking me for another $500. All pretty much for shit that competing companies are already providing in their initial cost. Anyway, at this moment, if I could start from scratch I definitely would NOT go with Digi. Cubase looks promising.

Wow that threw me for a loop! :D seeing that I got rid of my 002r and went to Cubase for those reasons!

I don't have to use firewire...I just want to be able to use simultanious tracks. With only one input on my computer, Ive been running everything through a mixer and everything I do goes to one track. It would be very nice to have more inputs on my computer. The behringer version of onyx looks pretty cool. Would that be OK? Would it also be an interface?

the new behringer mixer (though it hasn't been said for sure) I suspect will only send a stereo mix to the computer, not independent channels, so that will not help your cause.

The new PreSonus FireStudio looks promising....as does the Mackie 1200F that's coming out. For me, when I upgrade, it will come down to the following:

PreSonus FireStudio
Mackie Onyx 1200F
RME Fireface 800

I'm leaning to the Fireface just because it's available now, but we'll just have to wait and see when the bug strikes me the hardest and I feel the sudden urge to make a purchase....which could be very soon.

That new presonus thing looked awesome at Namm. Idk if we are thinking about the same thing...Im thinking about the one with 8 inputs in the front
